CECsst.248 TITLE: CURRENT EVENTS LISTENING ACTIVITY AUTHOR: Dave Rollins, Idaho Youth Services Center; St. Anthony, ID. GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for grades 5-12 OVERVIEW: This activity can be used for any age group, it entails the proper usage of news reports, newspapers, and news magazines woven with listening skills. PURPOSE: Through this activity students are exposed to current events, and how this changes the world around them. OBJECTIVE: Students will report on current events, while working on their listening skills. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: All resources are available in most libraries. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Students will write and present their current event within a group of five to ten persons. Anyone can start the discussion with their current event presentation. The second person to speak will repeat the main idea or ideas from the previous presentation. An "OK" from the first presenter indicates the message was received and interpreted correctly. The second person will now present their current event presentation. The third person will report what the second person said and check it out with them before presenting their current event. Each speaker will present the message of the person immediately preceding them. Anyone within the group can speak, you don't need to take turns around the circle. If a person can't repeat the previous message, then they are not permitted to offer their presentation. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: My students like this activity. It encourages them to keep abreast with current happenings, and how they shape the world we live in. This activity also sharpens listening skills essential in many learning activities.
