THE NINETEENTH AMENDMENT

Appropriate for grades 9-12.

OVERVIEW:  I use this activity to stimulate the interest of
students in learning about the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. 
It provides a novelty approach to teaching about Women's Suffrage. 
This activity fits into the area of expanding the right to vote
using the 19th Amendment.

PURPOSE:  This activity provides specific knowledge about Susan B.
Anthony and also about the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. 
The activity stimulates analytical thinking skills and class
discussion by learning how different groups of people received the
right to vote before women received this right.

OBJECTIVES:  Students will be able to:

 1.  Describe the process leading up to the passage of the 19th
     Amendment.

 2.  Describe the role Susan B. Anthony played in the Women's
     Suffrage Movement.

ACTIVITIES:  I have the school secretary dress up as Susan B.
Anthony.  She knocks on the classroom door and is admitted into
the classroom by the teacher.  She then gives a declaration about
the Women's Suffrage Movement.  At this time students may ask her
questions about the Women's Suffrage Movement including questions
about the period of time the 19th Amendment was passed.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS NEEDED:  Resources needed by the teacher is
the school secretary or another woman to dress up as Susan B.
Anthony and be knowledgeable about the Women's Suffrage Movement
and passage of the 19th Amendment.  Students need to take notes on
the report and ask questions to the resource person.

TYING IT ALL TOGETHER:  This activity is used as a novel approach
to stimulate interest and develop analytical skills of the
student.  Students will then conclude this activity by writing a
short essay describing the process leading up to the passage of
the 19th Amendment and the role Susan B. Anthony played in this
process.
