Alaska Chess News

August 21, 2008

Hello everyone!

I've spoken with Title Wave Books - the best book store in Alaska - and they've agreed to allow us to have our Labor Day Open chess tournament there.

Friday Aug 29th, the first round will begin at 7PM. Registration begins at 5:30P - be there early! If you walk in at 7PM, I may not get you into the tournament. We are limited on time that evening as the book store closes at 10PM. Also, I will be limiting the size of the tournament due to space restrictions, and it will be first come, first entered!

Saturday Aug 30th the round times will be at 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM. There will be no rounds on Sunday, this will just be a four round tournament.

Entry fee is $20 for adult, $10 for ages 15 and under.

Time controls are G/75 Friday, and G/90 on Saturday. (G/75 means each player has 75 minutes to complete all moves, G/90 means 90 minutes)

This is a USCF rated event, all entrants must be registered with the USCF. You can accomplish this at www.uschess.org or I can assist you with the process. If you need my assistance, be there early!

This is the first time we've tried having a full-scale tournament in a public place in some time. We will do all we can to minimize distractions, but Title Wave Books does a lot of business on Saturdays and there will no doubt be some curious onlookers.

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know. You can reach me via e-mail, or cell phone, 229-8189. Hope to see you there!

Kenai Chess Challenge Report

The 7th Annual Kenai Chess Challenge was held the last weekend of July in Soldotna. Three players, Chuck Sherwood, Dick Clendaniel and 11 year old Jesse Peterson, came down from Anchorage and Dylan Tucker made it all the way from North Pole. The top 3 players, Chuck, Matthew Parshall and Dick, all took turns beating each other and finished in a 3 way tie for first. Dick won the event on tie breaks. Many thanks to Randy Parshall and Christ Lutheran Church for hosting the event.

Until next time ...
