Orion Safari U20 and coaches team building weekend

Orion Chef
U20 and coaches tournament that was held at the Orion Safari this past weekend was a fantastic occasion full of fun and lots of chess.
Thanks to Franz Gmeiner from OrionSafari Hotel in Rustenburg for the fantastic facilities and staff at the Orion Safari, Rustenburg. A fantastic weekend was enjoyed by our senior players, coaches and administrators.
As usual the food was really enjoyed by all and we received many compliments on what a great place this is to hold such a tournament.
It seems unanimous that the players want this to be held on an annual basis. The idea was to have fun mixed with chess and we had 2 mini tournaments, one on Saturday which was 4 rounds of 30 /30.
On Sunday, the players decided to change Michael's suggested format to a round robin 5/5 - which was interesting especially as many players did not have a lot of sleep. This was fine as the idea was for these players to have fun as well as bond.
The hotel staff must be complimented - especially Shelly for making sure the arrangements went smoothly and to Henco who really went out of his way to assist. One of the players, Dale Pon, celebrated his 18th birthday on Sunday, and at very short notice he baked a cake and personalised it with Dale's name.
Lastly, we had a lucky draw for the weekend away to Piggs Peak for 2 (an approach which gave more players a chance to win). The lucky winner was Dirk Bakker.

Once again, all of the above would not have been possible were it not for Mr. Gmeiner and Orion's generous offer to make the facilities available. Gauteng West and NWR chess appreciate this gesture and hope that we will be able to repeat it in the future.

Many thanks
Orion players
Happy Birthday
