Labor Day Open Tournament Report

Eight chess enthusiasts participated in the Labor Day Chess Tournament in Anchorage and the youngsters made it clear there is a changing of the guard in Alaska chess. A 17 year old exchange student from Spain, Alvar Lluis Alabedra, with a FIDE 2086 rating was the early favorite to win the event. The first round went pretty much as expected with the only upset being Jeffrey Patterson's draw against Lloyd Hilling. In round 2, Alvar defeated Dick Clendaniel, Matthew Parshall posted a win against Lloyd Hilling, Greg Barry bested Jeffery Patterson, and Randy Parshall got the best of Burton Moon. It wasn't until round 3 when rising star Matthew Parshall, fresh off an outstanding performance at the US Open, squared off against Alvar Lluis Alabedra. Much to my surprise, and maybe Alvar's, Matthew worked a middle game pawn advantage down to an endgame forcing the Spaniard to resign in serious time trouble being unable to stop the pawn from promoting. In round 4 Matthew and Greg Barry played an excellent game that ended with Greg gaining a draw because of insufficient losing chances. The draw was Matthew's only blemish of the tournament. The last round saw wins for Matthew over Dick, Alvar over Lloyd, Greg over Burton, with Randy getting a forfeit win. Matthew was the clear winner with 4.5, Alvar took second with 4.0 and Greg Barry won the U1500 prize with 3.5. The Coast International Inn provided an excellent venue, one that I would like to use again, but a turnout of eight players doesn't justify the expense. Although we only had eight players there was some excellent chess, some of the best I have seen in quite some time. cross-table, photos

Blast from the Past!

Hi - Just noticed your site.  I'm Kevin Casey, 1980 Alaska State Champ (I also tied for the title in 81 with Bob Curry).  I'm currently living in Australia, still playing chess (came 3rd in last year's Queensland Chess Championships).  At the 1994 Noosa Open, I defeated Grandmaster Ian Rogers in a tournament game.  I was the editor and publisher of Queensland Chess magazine in 1998. Here's a game from Down Under
