Board Games

A game in a box with counters, dice, a board with an illustrated field or path around which the pieces move and a set of rules. Virtually all employ the last person standing or first past the post rule to decide the winner, though some few games like Sophie’s Choice are pure lifestyle re-enactments.

Military style games abound, like the Allies and Axis series based on World War Two campaigns. Older games from as much as forty years ago and more are still around and very popular like Diplomacy, Risk and Stratego all available on-line or from our Oxford shop. The Lord of the Rings books and subsequent films have spawned a plethora of Good versus Evil board games. Question and answer games where success propels you around the board can be straightforward like Trivial Pursuit in its various guises, or, maybe, involve forfeits for incorrect answers, or have multi-choice answers like Go Mental or involve a bit more culture like Ex Libris. Plain silly games where people have to perform tasks which involve feats of memory or acting ability are always popular, especially at Christmas, for instance Balderdash, Articulate and Playing Shakespeare.

Another ever popular category of board game is the word game, most famous of which is Scrabble. Not only do Hoyle’s stock the standard board version, but also Magnetic Travel Scrabble, De Luxe Travel Scrabble, Junior Scrabble Classic Original Scrabble and Prestige Scrabble. And if you’re missing score pads, turntables and racks just give us a telephone call to Oxford. Other favourites include Snatch, Anagram and Lexicon.

Obviously the all time favourites remain in the top ten sellers; Monopoly, Cluedo, Risk, Pit. And so on, but now you can get them in Classic Original Reprint Editions complete with wooden pieces and original reproduction boards and rules.
