Business, Opportunities, CooperationBulgaria was forced to stop two old reactors in its only nuclear power station on 31st December after it joined the EU in order to fall into line with security norms set by Brussels. Four of the six reactors in this station, running since 1980 were closed on the EU's request.

But Bulgaria does not want to do this without the perspective of compensation. It is requesting either one billion euros or the re-opening of reactors 3 and 4. At the end of November the government signed an agreement for the construction of a second station in Belene with the Russian company Atomstroyexport which subcontracts with a consortium comprising the French company Areva and the German Siemens. This station should be operational in 2013.   Read
