Welcome to the Chess Exchange!
It's good to see you here, and we hope you enjoy your stay.

Please keep a few things in mind:

1. Please be courteous. This chess forum is run by volunteers, and members are helping members. No flame wars: offensive messages can be removed without us informing you. No inappropriate language, no inappropriate content.

--

2. Consider using the search engine first when looking for an answer. See "I have a question, does the ChessExchange have the answer?" as well.

--

3. Be patient. Sometimes it takes a while before someone reads your message or knows the answer. Sometimes people fire up their own software and start looking for ways to solve your problems. That can take some time. They will be generally p***ed off when they log in again and read how impatient you are. Chances are now you won't get your answer anymore, which would be a shame.

--

3. This forum lives and dies by your input. Your question about chess software not working is as valuable as your answer about the Ruy Lopez. Others can (and will) benefit from your question and the answers you get.
If you send questions to moderators by private message, it will go unanswered without further notice. Read "Private Messages to Admin and Moderators" as well.

--

4. Post your question in the appropriate forum. Openings with openings, chess playing software with chess playing software, chess database software by chess database software.

--

5. Once is enough. Please consider that multiple postings of your question in various forums is considered inappropriate, and it will likely irritate people, diminishing your chances on a answer.
Post it only once, and it will be found! In the upper right corner of the main page you'll find "View posts since last visit". Clicking on it will bring up all new messages you didn't read before. It's a great way of keeping up with answers, questions tips, and discussions.

--

6. An account is free - without any obligations, but is required if you want to post a message. So no anonymous or guest posting allowed, basically to prevent spammers from doing there "work". If you register, don't forget to activate your account immediately. Every now and then we clean out the user database, deleting unfinished registrations.

--

7. So: no spam, no spammers. Spam will be deleted, spammers will be kicked out without further notice. No goodbye, no nothing. See also the separate "spam" posting about what is considered inappropriate.

--

8. Please no commercial messages about selling chess stuff: consider that the Chess Exchange is paid for by Chess Central as a free service to the chess community.

--

9. No links to warez (illegal distribution of software) or warez sites, no cracks for software, no license keys enabling people to run proprietary software without buying it.

--

10. Use smilies (or better: emoticons) if you're not sure other people will understand your intentions. Humor, irritation, sarcasm, it's all very difficult to express it with words alone. Hence the use of emoticons.
But remember that emoticons are not to be used as decoration of your message. It will likely tick off people, who have to wade through a forest of smilies. Use them sparsely and wisely.

--

11. Ten is enough! Very Happy Enjoy your stay.
