I am considering buying handheld device with primary goal of using it for chess learning during my trips. Are there chessbase type of products available for any of the platforms? |

Look here:

I would advice a Pocket PC powered device, and I slightly prefer the training products of ChessAssistant, like Pocket CT-Art (look for my review on this forum) and others. |

A cheaper solution!
Buy a Palm Z22 (107€ in Barcelona). It's cheaper than a Pocket PC( aprox. 300€). It seems a toy, but with Pocket Chess (avalaible online for 15 €, 19$,...) you can convert your databases, with variations and comments to portable files (pdb, palm data base) and study your favorite commented games when you are travelling! I bougt my Z22 and Pocket Chess a week ago and I am very happy with them.
To play chess on palm, you have OpenChes (free download from the web), Hiarcs, Chessgenius...
Good luck! |

I wouldn't recommend a palm. Why?
- A pocket pc is definitely more powerful.
- Pocket Fritz, which is definitely the strongest playing program, is not available for palm.
- Chess genius, a truly useful program, is available for both pocket pc and palm, HOWEVER, if they had to play against each other on the 2 different platforms, CG for palm would not stand a chess against CG for pocket pc!
- Lots of freeware programs which are not available for palm.
- You can plug a pocket pc to a vga projector. Don't know about a palm?
- Versatility: the amount of software currently being developed (and already developed) for a pocket pc is much more than palm.
- Currently there are several models of pocket pcs which also work as mobile phones. |

Yes, I tried on first palms for pocketchess. And after, pocket pc. I prefered
the pocket pc by far. There is the program 'pocketgrandmaster 2.1" , that works only in pocket pcs. This program is very useful, with a beautiful layout, a lot of games and exercises in database. It is the first in ranking of chess programs for handhelds in 2006 ( I dont know in 2007 ) - yes, there is a kind of ranking of these programs.
In this link there is an interesting and useful review of programs for pocket chess, written by an expert in computer chess.

I cant talk about the pocketFritz 2 for pocket pc because it didnt work in my pocket pc yet ( problems in the instalation ), but I believe it is a good program too. |
