Basic Tactics

Test Exercises

These exercises will test and reinforce what you've learned so far, as well as demonstrate more combinational possibilities.  Once you're through with them, you should read our "Practicing Tactics" article to show you how to pursue tactical studies further.

Exercise 1: Examine the board below.  White can fork Black's Queen and Rook with 1. Nd6, but is it a good idea?  Is there a better move for White?  [Solution]










Exercise 2:
Examine the board below.  White would like to play the pawn fork 1. d6, but Black can play 1...Nxd6 and capture the pawn.  Can White follow up with a devastating second move?  [Solution]










Exercise 3: Examine the board below.  White's Bishop has Black's Knight in an absolute pin.  How can White exploit this pin?  [Solution]










Exercise 4: Examine the board below.  White's Bishop is caught in a relative pin.  How can Black exploit it?  [Solution]










Exercise 5: Examine the board below.  This is an important endgame position -- try to visualize the moves clearly.  After 1. Rh8, does Black secure a draw with 1...Rxa7?  [Solution]
