When your king is in danger of being captured he

is said to be in CHECK.

ALL ELSE STOPS in order to protect the king.

There are three ways to do this....

1) CAPTURE THE ATTACKING PIECE

2) INTERPOSE ANOTHER PIECE

3) MOVE THE KING (you may not castle out of check)

If you can not get to safety..you are in "CHECKMATE"
