Master Senthilvel Nitin Wins: Top
seed S. Nitin of Salem won the 8th Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open
at the Bapalal Bhavan in Valmiki Nagar, South Chennai on Aug
3. Nitin
won in style with a round to spare with 8.5/9 and then made a
final round draw to finish on 9/10. He had previously won SPIC
and Palani Rating events in 2006. The second to fifth places
went to R. Arun Karthik, C. Praveen Kumar, Ramnath Bhuvanesh,
FM K.V. Shantharam on 8. Total of 186 players took part. The
prize fund was Rs.100,000. It was sponsored by a neighbourhood
newspaper run by S.P. Ambrose and A.D. Ranjan.

GM Michal Krasenkow of Poland
won the Mayor's Cup International Open at Mumbai held from May
10-20. He had the higher tie-break score after figuring in the
six-way tie for the first place on 9/11. M.S.Thejkumar of
Mysore completed his final GM norm. B.T.Muralikrishnan of
Madurai completed his final IM norm. Final placings: 1-6 GM Michal Krasenkow

This 34-year old Madurai Railway player from Madurai won the Tamil Nadu
State Championship at Chennai on June 23. He scored 9/11, the
same as top seed IM G.B. Prakash but pipped him on
tie-break. Muralikrishnan comes from a Chess Playing family. Details

Negi tied for first place in the Philadelphia Open in June
after winning the Kaupthing Open at Luxembourg. In July he

Peter Leko Wins Dortmund: Peter
Leko of Hungary regained the Sparkassen Chess Meeting title
when he scored 4.5/7. Several time champion Vladimir Kramnik
of Russia had the poorest show when he crashed to the last
round defeat to Vassily Ivanchuk. Kramnik played Petroff
Defence twice and lost twice. Is he going to have trouble

For Fifth Time For Anand: World champion and
World No.1 Viswanathan Anand won the Chess Oscar award for
2007 by a wide margin. Chess Oscar award is based on vote by
international chess journalists who generally look at the top
10-15 players closely. Vladimir Kramnik received the second
highest vote followed by Gata Kamsky. Anand won this award in
1997, 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2007. The 1969-born Anand is NIIT's
Brand Ambassador and is currently in India training.

Gets Four FIDE Trainers:
India's first FIDE Trainer Course got us four new FIDE
trainers and seven FIDE instructors, three National Instructor
and five Developmental Instructor on May 6. The
trainers are IM Jovan Petronic of Serbia and FM Peter Long of
Malaysia. About 19 students include IM G.B. Joshi, IM Neeraj
Mishra, V.Hariharan, K.Visweswaran who got the FIDE Trainer
titles. D.V. Sundar, AICF, said this will
happen each year. Ebenezer Joseph of Chennai became

R.R. Laxman Wins Rs.20,000: International
Master Rajaram Laxman of ICF, Chennai won the 260-player 2nd
FIDE Rated Tournament at Thrissur on April 30, 2008 when he
scored 8.5/10. The 105-kg 25-year old from Chennai took home
Rs.20,000. Laxman has won the most FIDE Rated Tournaments in
India in 2007 a pride which was taken by the controversial IM
D.P. Singh in 2005 and 2006. Laxman made a GM Norm this
month at Dubai and is on course to becoming India's next
GM.

Celebrates 61 Years On 26-4-2008: As
part of the 61st Anniversary, the TNSCA arranged 4 simultaneous displays. In the important one, Krishnan
Sasikiran played 30 games with black and lost two of them. One
of the games he lost was to V.A.V. Rajesh, Chennai schoolboy
who has an IM Norm to his credit. GM R.B. Ramesh gave a
lecture and the day also saw three other simultaneous
displays. Two of the founder members are still around. TNSCA
is one of the oldest associations. Sasikiran

Pips Sasikiran In Kolkata Open 2008:
Fourth seed Viktor Laznicka of Czech Republic won the Kolkata
Open ahead of top seed Krishnan Sasikian of ONGC, Chennai
after the younger visitor had the better tie-break score, both
finishing on 8.5/10. S.Safin Uzb) finished third on 7.5.
S.Chanda, Humpy, S.Arun Prasad, Ashwin Jayaram tied for the

Shekhar Ganguly Triumphs Down Under At Sydney: Five
time Indian champion GM Ganguly won the Sydney International
Open with 7/9. He shared the Australian Dollar 10,000 cash
prize with Zhang Zhong (Singapore), Gawain Jones (Eng) and
Zhao Zong Yuan (Australia). Ganguly started as the fourth seed
and won the 100-player event. It was Australia's strongest
Open Tournament ever. Ganguly works for Indian Oil, Kolkata.

Kamsky of USA is back and beat Alexei Shirov 2.5-1.5 in the
best of four finals of the World Cup at Khanty-Mansiysk. Krishnan

Reykjavik: Robert James
Fischer, of USA passed away on Jan 17 at Reykjavik following
Kidney failure. He was 64. He revolutionised the chess world
and obtained worldwide recognition for this mind sport. See

Velammal National 'A' Chennai at M.A.Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk: The
National 'A' concluded with GM S.S.Ganguly of Indian Oil,
Kolkata winning the title for the fifth time in a row to equal
one of the many records held by Manuel Aaron. He scored 7.5/9
and was playing at 2730 when he collapsed and failed to win
any of his last four games. Yet, Ganguly managed 9/13 and won
the event on tie-break. K.Ratnakaran of Kozhikode finished

Wins Morelia/Linares
2008:
Vishy Anand, defended his title at Morelia/Linares from
Feb 15-Mar 8 with a 8.5/14 score. Anand (8.5/14)
thrashed Shirov 2-0, Carlsen, Leko 1.5-0.5 each, drew Radjabov,
Ivanchuk, Topalov 1-1 and lost 0.5-1.5 to Aronian. His high
point was winning three black games at Morelia. Carlsen
was second with 8 and was the impressive runner-up. It is a category
21, the strongest in 2008. Anand lost one game, the least
in the event. "My first win against Shirov was my best
game," said Anand on the phone immediately after title

Vishy Anand, tied for third-fourth on 7.5/13 with Radjabov.
Aronian and Carlsen tied for first place with 8/13. Anand
missed a win against Kramnik in the final round which could
have given him a sixth title. S.Movsesian won Grand Master
Group B and Harikrishna finished fourth on 7.5. Humpy finished
eleventh with 5.5. In the Grand Master Group C, Negi lost to
Caruana in the final round to share second-third place with
8/13. Caruana won with 10/13. Harikrishna made his GM norm in 2001 at this same

MARIA FURTADO WINS WORLD Under-8 Girls Title With 9/11 At Antalya, Turkey: The
World Youth Championship concluded at Antalya in Turkey on Nov
28. Fifty-nine Indians competed. Expectations were high in India as we had won 5 of the 12 titles at Batumi in
Georgia last year. This time Ivana Furtado (see
pic greeting Anand) of Goa retained her title she
won last year. Delhi's Prince Bajaj won the bronze medal in
the Boys U-10 section and Shalmali Gagare of Shirdi (Mah) won

Finishes Second:
The World Blitz Chp is on in Moscow on
Nov 21-22. Vassily Ivanchuk won the event with a final
round win over Vishy Anand to finish on 25.5/38. Anand
moved from fifth place overnight to stay in joint lead
with 24.5/37 but lost to Ivanchuk in the final round
with white to lose game and title. Defending champion
Grischuk was third. The event is
also called the Tal Memorial. Anand beat Adams,
Morozevich, Carlsen, Gelfand and Korotylev 2-0. Official

Women A, Pune: Tania Sachdev retained her
National Women's Title after her tie-break score helped.
Tania, Kiran Mohanty, Soumya Swaminathan scored 8/11 and took
the top three places for the Olympic team. Harika, Swati Ghate
and Mary Ann were pushed out of the Olympic team. Humpy is

Honours Anand:
AICF felicitated Vishy Anand (see pic left) and awarded him Rs.10 lakhs
for winning the World Championship for the second time
at Mexico City. In a function organised by the AICF at
the Ball Room in Taj Connemara, Rahul Dravid showered
words of praise on Anand and asked both chess players
and non-chess players to take Anand as a role model.
Anand thanked AICF, N.Srinivasan, Dravid and Asian

Asia On Top Of The World
Asian chess is on the top of the world at the moment, but the future
looks even brighter, according to the president of the Asian Chess
Federation (ACF) Shaikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Bin Shakhboot Al Nahyan.
"The ACF is proud with seven world titles and the highest men's
ranking now," Shaikh Sultan said. "We have the men's World
Championship and the highest men's ranking - Indian GM Viswanathan
Anand - and the women's World Championship winner Xu Yuhua of China.
"It is only a few years ago when Europe, especially the former USSR,
dominated the game on all levels. Now India has become the capital
of chess as they can boast of no less than six world titles.-The

Wins Three Gold Medals At Macau: Overall,
India took the huge slice of five gold medals, two silver
medals and one bronze medals from possible nine in the Asian
Indoor Games that concluded at Macau on Nov 3. Sasikiran took
3 gold, while Humpy, Harika won two gold each. India did not
win any medal in the men's classical individual section. India
won Team Rapid gold, Rapid individual (Sasi), Rapid Individual
women (Harika), Blitz individual (Sasi), Blitz individual

Humpy Wins Blitz Gold Each: Second seed
Krishnan Sasikiran and top seed Koneru Humpy won Blitz Gold
Medals each in men and women in the Asian Indoor Games at
Macau on Nov 2. Sasikiran came back winning the last two
rounds. Murtas Kazhgaleyev (Kaz) took silver and Bu (Chn) took
the bronze medals. Humpy and Zhu Chen (Qat) scored 7.5/9 and
the Indian won the tie-break. Vietnam took the bronze. China
missed the blitz for women podium. A total of 23 men and 15
women played. In the team blitz event, India beat China but
lost to Kazakhstan and Malaysia to get silver.

WINS SILVER AT MACAU: Second seed India won the
silver medal in the Team Classical Chess at the Asian Indoor Games
at Macau on October 30. India won four matches, lost one to
top seed China and drew Vietnam 2-2. Gold went to China,
silver to India and bronze to Vietnam. 21 teams took part.
Sasikiran 3.5/6, Ganguly 3.5/6, Humpy 4.5/6, Harika 5/6. There
are more golds in blitz chess to be decided and the event
concludes on Nov 3. Sasikiran, Ganguly and Humpy are losing
Elo while Harika is gaining.

SHOOTS GOLD AT MACAU: Second seed India won the
gold medal in the Team Rapid Chess at the Asian Indoor Games
at Macau on October 27. India won all six matches. Beat top
seed China, Vietnam, Kazakhstan 2.5-1.5 each, Pak 4-0, Phi 3-1
and Indonesia 3.5-0.5. Sasikiran 5/6, Ganguly 3.5/6, Humpy
4.5/6, Harika 5/6. There are in all 9 gold medals to be won in
this event. 40 GMs from Asia and 14 WGMs are present there.
Rapid, classical and blitz chess in men, women and mixed are

Receives Rs.25 Lakhs: Anand
who won the World Chess Title for the second time received
Rs.25 lakhs from the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi
at the Fort St George in Chennai on Oct 24. During the
45-minute chat, Anand was accompanied by his wife Aruna Anand
and the Chief Minister by other Ministers Arcot N.Veeraswamy,
M.K.Stalin and Sports Minister Mohideen Khan. During the
previous tenure, Karunanidhi had presented Anand a house in

medals out of 24 and five titles. Though a slight slip from
the previous two years, one has to take into account that

G.N.Gopal of Aluva, Kerala became our latest GM when he made
his third and final GM Norm at Dhaka on Aug 29. He scored 7/9
in the Asian Zonal which is in progress. He made earlier GM
Norms at the International Open, Kolkata and by winning Lake
Sevan Cat 12 Event At Armenia. He is coached by IM Varugeese
Koshy. Gopal is rated 2480 and is a 18-year old. He should be
listed as GM in Oct 2007.

B.Adhiban (TN), Ratnakaran (Rly), M.R.Venkatesh (PSPB),
S.Kidambi (PSPB) 9.5/13. WGM Nisha Mohota was among the 11 new
qualifiers. The other 10 were: B.Adhiban, Akshat
