Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia defeated GM Ilya Smirin of Israel in a playoff game
to decide the 2003 World Open Champion. Ten players tied for first
place with 7-2 scores, and under the new playoff rules this year, the top
two on tiebreak played one game for $500 and the title. The time limit
was white 6 minutes and black 5 minutes, which black having draw odds.
As the leader on tiebreak, Ehlvest had choice of color and selected
black. Smirin developed an initiative in the game but Ehlvest was able
to ward off the attack.
Results this year were posted on this site
round by round. However, this page was not updated July 4-6, giving
some the impression that results were not being updated past July 4.
