McGowan was born in Newport. is a graduate of Hampton High School (74), The College of William and Mary (78) and taught at Gildersleeve Middle School.

The chess Grandmaster conducted a simultaneous chess tournament at the Olde Port Cove Clubhouse in Yorktown, Thursday evening.

Proceeds from the invitational will go to benefit the newly formed Old Port Cove Chess Club.
