Top-ranked Garry Kasparov will play a chess match against world champion computer Deep Junior in New York in
January 2003, about five years after his stunning loss to IBM's Deep Blue machine, the World Chess Federation announced.
Two preliminary games will take place in Jerusalem from January 7-9,
2003 but the results won't be official, the federation, known as FIDE, said in a statement on Friday.
The official part of the match will start Jan 22, 2003 in New York. Games will be played on various dates through February
02, with the closing ceremony scheduled for February 03, 2003 FIDE said.
Deep Junior, an Israeli program, recently won the World Computer Championship in the Netherlands.
In 1997, Deep Blue of IBM beat Kasparov in a match. IBM later cancelled
the Deep Blue project and the program is no longer available for competition.
An agreement reached in May ended a feud that started in 1993 when Kasparov broke away from FIDE to form the Professional Chess Association. Kasparov defended his world champion title twice under the association's auspices before it was dissolved in 1998, and then lost his title to Vladimir Kramnik two years later. He is now ranked No. 1 in the world, FIDE said in
a statement. |
