Round 1 Amber Blindfold

There were plenty of decisive results in the Amber Blindfold Round one section. The blindfold games are played with computers. An empty chessboard appears on the player's screen. The moves are made with a mouse or with the keyboard. Each move will appear on both screens. After confirmation of receipt, the opponent's clock starts and the move disappears. Time control 25 minutes plus 20 seconds per move. This is the only event where top players are called upon to play this form of chess. There have been some classic games in the past but the games are often marred by blunders. Blunders dominated the first round.

In the first set of games Morozevich won when Van Wely left a piece en-prise, Svidler reached a very favourable position against Leko but allowed a one move winning combination for Leko which wasn't spotted after which Svidler was just winning. Bareev - Gelfand was just a long game. In the second set of games Anand won a piece against Shirov who then resigned, Ivanchuk just lost material and Vallejo consolidated an advantage to a win against Topalov.

OK, its a bit tough at blindfold chess, but its now white to play and win. There were many moves that didn't allow the win, the point is that the rook blocks the queen from taking on g6 and protecting black's king.

26.Rf2?? [26.Rg6+! checkmates for white. Now the game resumes the course it had been on.] 26...e3 27.dxe3 Qxe3 28.Kh1 Qxa7 29.Bxh3 Rxb5 30.Qc1 Rg6 31.Rf3 Rc5 32.Qf4 Qc7 33.Qe3 Rc1+ 34.Bf1 Qc5 35.Qxc5 Rxc5 36.Bg2 d4 37.Rf4 Rc1+ 38.Bf1 Rg3 39.b4 Rb3 40.Kg2 Rxb4 41.Kf2 Rc2 42.Rg4+ Kf8 43.Kf3 Rb1 44.Bg2 Rb3+ 45.Ke4 Rxe2+ 0-1

Round 1 Rapid

In the rapid event the time rate is 25 minutes + 10 seconds a move.

First Set of rapid games. Van Wely - Morozevich saw Morozevich play 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Bf5!? The game never really departed from equality and was drawn after 53 moves. Svidler - Leko was a 3.Bb5 Sicilian with some intricate play but again was drawn, this time after 57 moves. Bareev got something of an advantage with black in a Slav against Gelfand, he pressed for a while but didn't find a way of exploiting his advantage.

2nd set of Rapid Games. The first game to finish was Topalov-Vallejo which was a fairly quick draw in a Slav. Shirov against Anand was an interesting dynamic Caro-Kann. Sadly this came to an abrupt halt when Shirov blundered a piece. The final game to finish saw a very complex and interesting Sicilian between Vassily Ivanchuk and Vladimir Kramnik. Ivanchuk was winning by move 43. and converted this advantage by move 55.
