Round 5 Blindfold 22nd March 2005

Blindfold first three round 5 games

Peter Svidler moved in second place in the Blindfold standings with a gratifyingly aggressive attack against Evgeny Bareev's English. Boris Gelfand and Alexander Morozevich played a sharp Slav Defence that concluded in a rook and pawn ending which was just saved by Gelfand. Peter Leko got a slight advantage as black against Loek van Wely but never came close to winning.

Blindfold second three round 5 games

Rarely has Vladimir Kramnik been so horribly crushed. He grabbed a piece against Vallejo Pons but could never co-ordinate his pieces in the face of pins and onrushing pawns. Vassily Ivanchuk "held" Viswanathan Anand to his first draw at blindfold chess on the white side of a Scotch. Alexei Shirov and Vesselin Topalov contested a fairly uneventful Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence.

Rapid first three round 5 games

Peter Svidler was worse against Evgeny Bareev on the white side of a French Defence but quickly a totally drawn bishop of opposite colours ending was reached. Peter Leko against Loek van Wely saw Leko play a Bb5 Sicilian, not get very much and end up in an ultimately drawn bishop of same colour endgame. Morzevich - Gelfand was a Catalan. It was a game of fluctuating fortunes, Gelfand eventually emerged with an extra pawn in a rook and pawn ending and converted it.

Rapid second three round 5 games

Kramnik played an interesting opening as black against Vallejo but essentially openings such as the 4 knights aren't played anymore because after initial complexity they tend to fizzle out to draws and that's what happened here. Anand carried on with his winning ways by beating Ivanchuk on the white side of a French. Black looked to be more than fine for a while but after lengthy manoevering Ivanchuk's position began to come apart and Anand drove his advantage home. Vesselin Topalov scored his first win on the white side of an 4. ...a6 Slav (I actually had this variation on Tuesday!) Black was doing fine for a long time but once he weakened his Kingside Topalov got some great attacking prospects most of which he exploited.
