NH Chess Tournament
The 3rd NH Chess Tournament takes place in Amsterdam August 20th-30th, 2008. The venue of this clash between 'Rising Stars' and 'Experience' is the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in the centre of the Dutch capital, at a five minutes’ walk from Central Station.
The Experience team consists of: Evgeny Bareev (Russia, 2655), Viktor Kortchnoi (Switzerland, 2602), Artur Jussupow (Germany, 2587), Simen Agdestein (Norway, 2583) and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Serbia, 2555).
The Rising Stars team consists of Wang Yue (China, 2704), Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgaria, 2687), Fabiano Caruana (Italy, 2630), Daniel Stellwagen (The Netherlands, 2616) and Erwin l’Ami (The Netherlands, 2610).
They play a 'Scheveningen' tournament, which means that each player of one team plays against each of the players of the other team. They do so twice, once with the white pieces and once with the black pieces. However, the Rising Stars may be most interested in the special prize for the player on their team with the highest score: an invitation to the prestigious 2009 Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament in Nice.
The rounds start at 13.30 hrs (except for the last round on August 30, which starts at noon; August 25 is a free day) and every day there is expert commentary for the public. Admission is free.

Bilbao Grand Slam Final
The 1st Grand Slam Chess Final Masters takes place 2nd-13th September 2008 in Bilbao with 6 players in a double round robin format. They are: World Champion Viswanathan Anand, the in-form Vassily Ivanchuk, Veselin Topalov, the de-facto world number 2 Magnus Carlsen (his Foros result was too late for the July rating list), Teimour Radjabov and Levon Aronian.
Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and another 60 minutes to finish the game.
The total prize money amounts to €400,000: €150,000 for 1st, €70,000 for 2nd, €60,000 for 3rd, €50,000 for 4th, €40,000 for 5th and €30,000 for 6th.
Other innovations include three points for a win and only a point for a draw (in events where this has been tried before its never really seemed to make much difference to the final result in my opinion) and that they will play outside in a huge soundproofed and air-conditioned glass case which is under construction. This will be placed in the Plaza Nueva in Bilbao under a marquee which will also accommodate The Agora for analysis and comments.
