Traditionally, YCCF Chess Tournaments have the most and best trophies, awards and prizes of any Scholastic Chess Tournament.

YCCF normally has at least one chess master on site to provide limited group chess instruction and individual game analysis. This is free to all participants and is a good opportunity to receive some excellent chess instruction and analysis at no cost. YCCF encourages all participants to have at least one of their own games analyzed. One of the best and most effective chess learning techniques is game analysis.

These chess masters are also often available for individual; team; club; group; and/or school lessons! Please inquire directly with these chess masters for rates; schedules; levels of play that they teach; locations where they teach; etc.

The Host schools normally also provide some form of entertainment after the Tournament and before the Awards Ceremony. This has helped ensure that YCCF Tournaments are unique in the scholastic chess world and also provides a wonderful opportunity for the Host School kids to showcase their talent for 15 to 20 minutes to 300-400 people while awaiting the determination of the final results.

Please note the entertainment does not add extra time to the Tournament. It does allow you to be entertained [If you wish] while waiting for awards. If you do not wish to be entertained please leave the awards area until we commence actually handing out awards. This courtesy will allow those who wish to hear the entertainment to actually do so. This year we will ask anyone who is disruptive or disrespectful to our student entertainers to leave the awards area until awards are ready to be handed out. If you have no interest, go outside and play. In any event, please show all student entertainers the respect that you would like to receive if you were providing the entertainment. [Coaches and Parents please help with this.]

YCCF also normally has chess vendors on site to provide the opportunity to purchase books, supplies, chess sets, chess clocks, etc.

Please email me at youthchessorg@aol.com or call me at my office (661) 827-9068 or (661) 827-9075 if you have any questions.

Also visit our website at www.youthchess.com for entry forms, results of Tournaments, pictures, Tournament schedule, etc.

We are having another exciting chess season in Kern County. We hope to see all of you there.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
QUESTION: CAN A PLAYER CHOOSE TO PLAY IN AN HIGHER SECTION WITHIN HIS/HER GRADE LEVEL OR HIGHER GRADE OR SECTION THAN THEIR ACTUAL GRADE LEVEL?
ANSWER: Yes! Any Player can play in a Higher section if they are seeking more competition. A player cannot play in a lower rated section and cannot play in a lower grade section than his/her grade section.
QUESTION: UNDER THE NEW FORMAT WITH 9 INDIVIDUAL SECTIONS AND 5 TEAM SECTIONS, HOW WILL TEAM SCORES BE CALCULATED?
ANSWER: Individual scores from different sections within one Team section will be combined. For example if a school had 4 participants in the K-3 U400 and unrated (Junior Varsity- "JV") section with scores of 5, 3, 2, 1 and 4 participants in the K-3 open (Championship - "C") section with scores of 4, 4, 3, 1; the top 5 scores from both sections will be combined for a total combined Team score of 19.

Section   JV   C   C   C   JV
________   ________   ________   ________   ________   ________
Score   5 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 3   =   19
For those of you familiar with the Western States Single Grade Scholastic Chess Championships where there are 13 Individual sections and 5 Team sections, various Individual sections are also combined in a similar manner to arrive at Team scores for each of the 5 Team sections.
