HIGH VOLTAGE

Larry, Sam, Mollie & Al are members of a gang led by Johnny (Antonio Sabato Jr). One day, they decided to rob a small bank in Chinatown. After some careful planning, they decided to act. First, Mollie takes a job at the bank & on the day of the robbery, Johnny walks in to the bank, meets the bank manager, Jane (Shannon Lee) & creates a diversion as the others rush in with guns. However, Johnny discovers that the bank was owned by a powerful Vietnamese triad gang leader, Victor Fan. Not wanting to get in trouble with Fan, Johnny urged his gang to get out. Hot tempered Larry didn't understand why Johnny didn't want to take the bank's money so they both started arguing. It seems that there was love at first sight between Johnny & Jane because she didn't want to alert Vietnamese gang about the robbery. However, one of the bank staff did & before they knew it, Johnny & his gang found themselves under attack. They managed to get away but Al was shot & they had to leave him behind. Fan sent his men to continue persuing Johnny & his gang till they were killed. Thinking hard on how to get his gang out of this mess, Johnny goes & look for Jane.

Zeroing on Jane's personal life, we find that she's Fan's slave & mistress. She hates that but she can't leave him, like she said, "You don't just leave Victor Fan, unless it's in a coffin." She agreed to help Johnny out of this mess on condition that Fan get killed so that she achieves her freedom. She told Johny that in a few days, Fan would have a meeting with some of his powerful partners & was supposed to hand over a large sum of money to them. They planned to attack, get Fan's money & kill him before his partners arrived.

During the attack, they managed to get the money but failed to kill him. Jane was upset but there was nothing else she could do. She followed Johnny & his gang to a tavern where he was supposed to meet one of his friends. Halfway, Larry betrayed them by contacting Fan & give him their location after Fan promised him 25% of the money. However, one gangster heard Larry's conversation & wanted the money. So, a fight took place between the two groups. Johnny & gang managed to escape again but Sam was killed.

They moved on to a hotel owned by one of Johnny's friend. By this time, it's obvious to see romance between Johnny & Jane. Fan persued them till the hotel & one last fight took place. This time, Fan dies, leaving Jane free to be with Johnny. How else can it end but they live happily ever after?!

My comment: A rather emotional movie with a straight forward & almost usual storyline. The action consist mainly of gun war & occasional kicks & punches. Suitable for those who prefer romance & drama with fighting to spice it up. Those who are used to Jet Li, Jackie Chan or Chow Yun Fatt might find the action here a little slow moving.
