The Workers' Olympiad history

The communist propagandaThe idea behind the Workers' Olympiad was to unite Eastern European Soviet satellite countries under the Red Flag symbolizing the international communist workers' movement. One does not have to mention that from purely chess point of view the event had nothing to do with the worker class. Participating teams sent professional chess players to Czechoslovakia to participate in the premier edition of the Workers' Olympiad. The competition was very strong, Hungary won as expected and Poland's result was sort of sensation. Apparently this tournament was the first and the last event of this kind. The event was ceased soon. Communist press does not mention a word about reasons of cancellation.
