It took more than two decades as FIDE decided to run the Women's World Team Championship on the basis of the same pattern as that adopted at the men's championship which took off in Lucerne in 1985. The premier edition for women was scheduled in Russia in 2007 and was an invitational tournament only opened to some of top teams from previous Olympiad as well as the continental champions and a few sides to benefit from the wild card granted by FIDE. The format set was a four board all-play-all.
The very first title went to four time Olympic winners China. This they did in style, winning eight of their nine four-board matches and dropping just a single two-all draw against Georgia to finish at the top at 17 points ahead of Russia and the Ukraine. Next edition is due in 2011.
