  Chess Fonts - headline

Last update 11th August 2007.

With chess fonts you can make chess diagrams or print games with figurine notation. On this page you can view and download fonts.

Chess fonts is a flexible tool and allow you to easily change style and layout. Some fonts have characters suited for decor, and others have Informator symbols or pieces for fairy chess. For advice on how to use chess fonts and solve common problems, see the page Chess Fonts FAQ. On Chess Publishing is a more basic introduction.

If you want to make your own font, you can use the graphics program "Corel Draw" or try the shareware program Font Creator for 30 days. Before buying a professional program it may be wise to seek financial council...

View Cases Cases

Freeware. True Type Font by Matthieu Leschemelle. The font was originally for making diagrams with Matthieu's program Problemiste, a program for solving chess problems. Armando Marroquin has since redesigned the font, and now it can be used as a "stand alone font" for diagrams and figurine notation and frame with co-ordinates is an option. View pieces.
Download Chess Cases (26 KB)

View Adventurer Chess Adventurer

Freeware. True Type Font by Armando H. Marroquin for diagrams and figurine notation. Frame with co-ordinates possible. The bishop is special, but otherwise the font is traditional. The black squares can be coloured with a special masque technique, if you like. This must be done manually: make the squares first and then add the pieces. Looks good on a colour printer! View pieces. Download Chess Adventurer (32 KB)

View Alfonso-X Chess Alfonso-X

Freeware. True Type Font by Armando H. Marroquin for diagrams and figurine notation. Some may find the font "a bit modern", but that's a mistake! - The pieces are copied from a Spanish chessbook from 1283, when 'Alfonso the Wise' ruled in Spain. Frame with co-ordinates possible. View pieces.
Download Chess Alfonso-X (28 KB)

View Chess Alpha Chess Alpha

Freeware. True Type Font by Eric Bentzen for diagrams and figurine notation. A traditional font, but designed with less detail for better output on printers and photocopiers. Frame with co-ordinates possible. View Pieces.

View Chess Alpha Chess Alpha2

Freeware. Peter Strickland has modified the original Chess Alpha font. The characters are now optimised for typing moves, with most characters on the keyboard. He has also added letters, numbers and punctuation, so you don't have to switch fonts when typing. The figurine characters are now smaller, to fit on the text baseline, and have thicker strokes, to print more clearly at the smaller size.
