Most chessplayers who have been around the US chess community for any length of time know of Bob Long. Bob is not only a chessplayer himself, but was the man behind Chessco, is the man behind The Thinker's Press, and now he's the man behind The Chess Reports.

Chess Reports is an ongoing series of pdf files delivered every other Friday via e-mail. Each issue contains a wealth of chess instruction, with a wide variety of subject matter: "Topics of Coverage: Endgame; Odds and Ends; Openings; Planning; Psychology; Strategy; Tactics; Traps."

How did the idea for Chess Reports come about? Bob writes:

"To be blunt, I was tired of seeing club and tournament players playing lousy and unfulfilling chess. And, I was tired of seeing them frustrated and offering excuses for poor play or bad results even if their play was good.

Eventually this would lead, I surmised, to those players dropping out of chess due to lack of positive results. I still hear "quitters" talk about the "old" days when their rating was such and such. But now, they intone, they have less time, other interests and the usual excuses no one wants to listen to. One fellow told me the most infuriating thing he would hear chess players recite was, "I had a win, but..."

After the Fischer boom was over, a lot of "players" had left to go on to the next fashionable "thing." Many of the players who were left had become battle-hardened though not necessarily better players. Certain chess magazines kept using the same authors, year after year, who had no stake in failure. If Chess Reports doesn't do its job, I am out of business."

So what, exactly, does The Chess Report look like? Let me show you a few things, beginning with the inevitable quiz, which is longer than what you see below, but this will give you a feel for the idea (Note: I had to down-size the image below to make it fit this page):

Now, Bob does change styles periodically in the layout or format of The Chess Report. Why? I'll let bob explain it to you:

By now you're probably asking yourself - "It sounds good, but what's it cost?" Again, I'll let Bob answer:

New subscribers can get the first 4 semesters for $99, all 52 issues. Semester 5, which I am just starting is $50. If, however, you buy the $99 package (all emailed), you can get two people subscribed for $50, that is, $25 for the person who bought the $99 package, and $25 for the new subscriber. I feel it is one of my best deals ever. All new subscribers will also receive an 8=page parody on scholastic chess called "The Whinnying Knight."
