News & Notes 12
By ICCF GM Yoav Dothan

I will be happy to get comments or analyzed games – you can e-mail them directly to me.

Here are some notes on the Capablanca Memorial Elite Havana tournament and also from SK Liburnija GM Rijeka CRO.

(1)  Bareev,E (2683) - Nogueiras,J (2554) [D94]
Capablanca mem Elite Havana CUB (1), 21.11.2006

All along White had excellent winning chances, but gradually his advantage evaporated until he made a losing move.  After 31 moves the game reached this position:

Here Black played 31...Nb4 [ 31...Be7 is better ] 32.Rc8 [and White missed the nice 32.Ne5 Be7 (on f:e5 comes 33. Rc7 N:c7 34. R:c7 and wins)  33.Qg2 fxe5 34.Bxe7 exd4 35.Nxd4 Na2 36.Rc8 Rxc8 37.Rxc8 Qa6 38.Be2 and wins ] 32...Rxc8 33.Rxc8 Qa6 34.Bd7 Nxd3 35.Bxe8 Bxe8 36.Nc7 Bd7 37.Nxa6 Bxc8 38.Nc7 Bf5 39.Nxd5 Rc6

40.e4 [White could play: 40.Nc3 Bb4 41.Qg2 g5 42.Na2 Bd6 43.Bg3 Bxg3 44.Qxg3 Kg6 45.Qf3 and White is better ] 40...Bxe4 [Black misses: 40...Rc1 41.Qxc1 Nxc1 with good chances to draw the game.] 41.Bxf6+ Kg8 42.Nc3 [Much better winning chances could be had with: 42.Bg5 Bxd5 43.Qxd3 Bg7 44.Bf4 Rb6 45.Qc3 Rc6 46.Qe3 Kf7 47.Be5 Bf8 48.Qf4+] 42...Bf5 43.Bg5 Re6 44.Qf3 Re1+ 45.Kg2 Re4 46.Qd1 [ Here 46. Kh2 R:d4 47. Q:b7 or  46.Qg3 Rxd4 47.Qb8 Kf7 48.Qxb7+ would be much better.]

46...Rxd4 [Here Black missed 46...Bxh3+ 47.Kh2 Bd6+ 48.Kxh3 Nf2+ 49.Kg2 Nxd1 50.Nxe4 Bf8 with draw.] 47.Qb3+ Kh7 48.Bf6 Rd7 49.Qc4 Bh6 50.Ne2 Ne1+ 51.Kf2 Nd3+ 52.Kg2  [White should play 52.Kg1 Be3+ 53.Kh2 Nc5 54.Qh4+ Kg8 55.Bc3 Ne4 56.Qh8+ Kf7 57.Qg7+ Ke8 58.Qg8+ with good chances to win.] 52...Ne1+ 53.Kg3 Nc2 54.Kh2 Ne3

55.Qh4?? [55.Qb5 Rf7 56.Qb6 Be4 57.Qd8 Bg7 58.Qd4 Rxf6 59.Qxe3 Bc6 60.Qe7] 55...Rd2 0–1

(2) Nogueiras,J (2554) - Ivanchuk,V (2741) [E04]
Capablanca mem Elite Havana CUB (2), 22.11.2006

After 31 moves White had an interesting plan:

32.Qxg5  Instead he could play: 32.Rf1 Nbd5 33.Rf7 Rf8 34.e6 Rxf7 35.exf7 Kg7 36.Qxg5+ Kxf7 37.Bxd5+ Nxd5 38.Qxd5+ and White wins.  32...Qe7 33.Qxe7 Ne2+ 34.Kh2 Rxe7 35.Bg5 Re8 36.Rf1 Nd7 37.Bc6 Rxe5 38.Bh4 Rxh5 39.Bxd7 c3 40.Bg4 Rxh4+ 41.gxh4 c2 42.Bxe2 d2 0–1

(3) Bareev,E (2683) - Ivanchuk,V (2741) [E37]
Capablanca mem Elite Havana CUB (4), 24.11.2006

White has to play very carefully.  In this position it seems that the saving continuation might be 32.Re8+ Kh7 33.Re3 Qf6 34.Qc2 Qf4 35.Rg3 Qxb4 36.c6 bxc6 37.Rxg6 fxg6 38.Qxc6

32.Qf5 Qc6 33.Re4.Rg5 34.Qf3 Qd7+ 35.Kh4 Rg1 36.Qe3 Qf5 37.Re8+ Kh7 38.Qe4 g5+ 0–1

And the mate is immediate.

(4) Ivanchuk,V (2741) - Miton,K (2638) [B52]
Capablanca mem Elite Havana CUB (5), 25.11.2006

It is difficult to see that the next move is a crucial error, especially as Black did not play the winning move...

28.Qe3 [White should play 28.Rxd4 exd4 29.Rd3 Qxg5+ 30.Kf2 Qc5 31.h4 and he can hope to draw.] 28...Qd5 [The winning move: 28...Rg4+ 29.Kf2 Rdd4 30.Rc3 Rgf4+ 31.Ke1 Qb5 32.Rc8+ Kxg7 33.Rxd4 Qf1+ 34.Kd2 Rf2+] 29.Rxd4 exd4 30.Qf4 d3 31.Rd2 Qc5+ 32.Rf2 Qd5 33.Rd2 Re8

White should play now 34.g6 Qc5+ 35.Kg2 Qc6+ 36.Qf3 Qxg6+ 37.Kf1  with chances to hold the game.

34.Kf2 Re4 35.Qf6 Re5 36.Rxd3 Rf5+ 0–1

(5) Bruzon,L (2648) - Bareev,E (2683) [C13]
Capablanca mem Elite Havana CUB (5), 25.11.2006

This game remains a mystery; even after spending quite a lot of time I cannot understand Black's 17th move: B:e5 when I think N:h7 should win.  I will be happy to get comments!

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 dxe4 5.Nxe4 Be7 6.Bxf6 Bxf6 7.Nf3 Nd7 8.Qd2 0–0 9.0–0–0 Be7 10.Bd3 b6 11.h4 Bb7 12.Rh3 c5 13.Neg5 Nf6 14.Rg3 last book move 14...Qc7 15.Ne5 cxd4 16.Qf4 Bd6 17.Nxh7

17...Bxe5  [I do not see the danger in playing 17...Nxh7  and now either:

1) 18.Bxh7+ Kh8 19.Rg5 Bxe5 20.Rxe5 f6 21.Re4 Qxf4+ 22.Rxf4

or

2) 18.Re1 f5 19.Bc4 Rae8 20.Qxd4 Nf6 21.f4 Ne4 22.Rg6 Bxe5 23.Qxe5 Qxe5 24.fxe5 Kf7

18.Nxf6+ Kh8 19.Qg5 Bf4+ 20.Kb1 Bxg5 21.hxg5 gxf6 22.Rh3+ Kg8 23.gxf6 Qe5 24.Bh7+ Kh8 25.Bd3+ Kg8 26.Bh7+ ½–½

And also some notes from SK Liburnija GM Rijeka CRO

(6) Saric,A (2489) - Markus,Rob (2567) [E12]
SK Liburnija GM Rijeka CRO (7), 20.11.2006

After 31 moves Black could draw the game with 31...Nf5 32.Qc7 Qxf6 33.gxf5 Qg5+ 34.Kh1 Qg3 35.fxg6 Qxh3+ and so on.

31...Nxc4 32.Qd4 Rc8 33.Nxh7+ Qe5

34.g5 Kxh7 35.Rxf7+ Kg8 36.Qxh4 Kxf7 37.Qh7+ Kf8 38.Rf1+ Ke8 39.Qxg6+ Kd8 40.Qg8+ Kc7 41.Q:c4+ wins nicely.

34.Rxf7 Qxd4+ 35.Rxd4 Ne5 36.Rf8+ Kxh7 37.Rxc8 Nf3+ 38.Kg2 Nxd4 39.Rb8 b5 40.Ra8 Bg5 41.Ra7+ Kh6 42.Rxa6 Bc1 43.h4 Kg7 44.Rb6 Kf7 45.Kf2 Kg7 46.b3 Ba3 47.Ke3 Nc2+ 48.Ke4 b4 49.h5 gxh5 50.gxh5 Kh7 51.Rg6 Na1 52.Kd3 Bb2 53.Rg2 Be5 54.Re2 Bg7 55.Re4 Bc3 56.Re6 Kg7 57.Rg6+ Kh7 58.Rc6 Bb2 59.Kc4 Nc2 60.Rg6 Ba3 61.Re6 Na1 62.Re1 Nc2 63.Re2 Na1 64.Rh2 Kh6 65.Kb5 Bc1 66.Kxb4 Bf4 67.
