The Parrot is a busy bird, he flies from bough to bough!
He whistles in a rhubarb tree, and does he squawk, and how!

This week he is very happy to announce a new columnist to Chessville, who want to make this "THE" scholastic chess source for parents, coaches and young players to come for information.

And so,
in the very
near future,
we will be
pleased to
feature a
monthly column
by GM
Susan Polgar
.

Wake up all ye US College Team!  A letter to the Parrot proclaims:

Hello fellow chess teams! We're writing to let you know that we are now recruiting teams for the 2005-2006 season of the Internet College Chess League (ICCL).

Last year we were able to restart this league with a handful of dedicated university teams.  At least 3 masters and plenty of experts were involved in exciting internet matches.  This year, we're looking to expand the league and attract a larger range of teams.  Read the entire letter and instructions at http://www.chessville.com/ICCL.htm.

Sincerely,  Gregory Alexander and Nick Matelli
ICCL Directors 2005/6

More bad news about chess mentoring.  A chess mentor has been arrested this week on suspicion of abusive activities with mentored children.  Is it time for some chess organization to provide background checks similar to those used in every public high-school in the USA?  This is the third instance in just a few years.  The accused is being held on the non-trivial $750,000 bail.

This week major chess activities in the USA are in support of the Katrina relief fund.  Last week the Susan Polgar Foundation made a fine offer, and here is another one from an international source that has offered 50% of new subscriptions to their e-zine as aid relief.

These photographs show the sense of impending menace as Katrina arrived in Louisiana.

Long-time denizen of the French Quarter in New Orleans, 2500-rated Jude Acres is no longer MIA.  He has made direct contact with Chessville via e-mail today.  He writes: "I am very very lucky to be alive.  After nine days of wild west it is over. Thank you. - Jude Acers"

World round-up. It seems that Chechen troops are attacking Kalmykia, home of Fide’s President.  The 76th FIDE Congress was held in Dresden, Germany last week, and whatever was resolved there will now be examined as usual to see if it can be put into practice.  Gary Kasparov continues with his political ambitions in Russia, and was detained at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport last week.  Kasparov told the Ekho Moskvy radio station: “When I came to the window and produced my passport, a female lieutenant recognized me and asked me to wait.  After that a male lieutenant came, took my passport and left.  He came back and went away several times, made phone calls and asked me questions.  Being asked what it was all about, he said that the matter was classified”.  Kasparov said that the only phrase that he could hear as the man was talking on the phone was: “How can I stop a Russian citizen from entering Russia?  This phrase led me to a conclusion that my name had been put on some sort of black list requiring some measures…”

Meanwhile decisions are being made by the new USCF board on what to do about USCF HQ?  Will it stay in problematic Crossville TN, which this week on TV was described as the methamphetamine capital of the South.  It now seems likely that the new board will eventually usher it out of the basement where it is temporarily housed to occupy the 3 acre wetland site donated to it by the town and purportedly worth $264,000, though this figure is difficult to comprehend.  Then the most pregnant question of all: what activities will it then conduct from its new pastoral location to further chess in the USA?

Susan Polgar’s attempt to win a world record simul in Florida was successful! This attempt to set a Guinness World Record by playing more than 321 chess games at once (to be eligible for the record, she will have to win at least 80 percent). She achieved the record on Monday August 1st, taking on amateur challengers including children at the Gardens Mall at 3101 PGA Blvd. in Palm Beach Gardens (see Web site). The event will raise funds for the not-for-profit Susan Polgar Foundation, which promotes chess among children worldwide, with a focus on girls. See recent article in the Los Angeles Times.

She has been interviewed by more than two dozens journalists and ABC aired various interviews. GM Polgar has been filming at the World Chess Hall Of Fame (Miami) and ABC Studio (Palm Beach Gardens). In addition, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and many major international newspapers have covered the attempt, including the London Times, Telegraph and International Herald Tribune.

Newly elected board members and incumbents have urged USCF President Beatriz Marinello not to do anything rash in her last 2 weeks of presidency; specifically not committing to a new HQ building contract in Crossville TN. An open letter to this effect has been published and signed by Joel Channing, Bill Goichberg, Don Schultz, Greg Shahade, and Robert Tanner.

Two days after this letter was published to internet newsgroups another letter appeared from the USCF president apparently committing the new board to a building contract before the board can officially convene to determine the matter themselves.

TheParrot has still not been able to solicit any official statement from other USCF board-members on the Natrol affair, a supposed chess-enhancement substance, which USCF seems to have recommend to young players during a tournament, but without board approval or even their knowledge!  USCF recently have sold their HQ in NY State for about half a million dollars, and are now poised to construct a new building, half the size of the NY property, on problematic wetlands in Crossville TN.  Estimates of the cost of a new building have varied considerably, but no estimate is less than the sale price of the NY property.

The charges against FIDE Vice President GM Zurab Azmaiparashvili were made following an incident that took place at the end of the last FIDE Olympiad in Calvia, Spain, in October 2004. FIDE Vice President GM Zurab Azmaiparashvili was originally charged with assaulting the police and resisting arrest despite the fact that he was assaulted by the Guardia Civil. Facing overwhelming evidence by the defence, all charges were promptly dropped before the commencement of the hearing.
