The (34th) Greek Teams Championship took place, July 4th to July 11th, at the nice resort of Ermioni in Peloponnese, southern Greece.

  • Banikas (2548)

  • Halkias (2548)

...several top-GMs were also included in the line-up:
  • Azmaiparashvili (GEO, 2672)
  • Volokitin (UKR, 2671)
  • Navara (CZE, 2663)
  • Avrukh (ISR, 2652)
  • Socko (POL, 2615)
  • Gustafsson (GER, 2614)
  • Asrian (ARM, 2611)
  • Izoria (GEO, 2606)
  • An. Sokolov (FRA, 2603)
  • Macieja (POL, 2593)
  • Rozentalis (LTU, 2567)
  • Chuchelov (BEL, 2562)
  • Solak (YUG, 2557)
  • Bojkov (BUL, 2522)
  • Svetushkin (MDA, 2514)
  • WGM Trabert (GER, 2291)
  • WIM Bosboom-Lanchava (NED, 2363) etc.

Ratings are those announced by FIDE on July 1st, 2005.

It is considered to be one of the most exciting championships in Europe.  There were 16 teams participating (the last three were relegated to B’ division) and they played on 12 boards: Men in the first 5, a lady on 6th, girls (under 18 and under 14) on the 7th and 8th and boys (U-18, U-16, U-14 & U-12) on the 9th-12th.  Two foreigners were allowed to every team.

The games were being held on a daily basis, July 4th to July 11th.

During 9 tense rounds, the main favourites (title-holders of  “Kydon” Hania, S.O. Kavalas and E.S. Thessalonica) vied for the top-places.  Finally,  S.O. Kavalas won the gold medal, with 16 p. (8 wins, one loss – to “Kydon” Hania, in the last round).  The strongest players of the team were An. Sokolov, Kotronias, Halkias, Skembris, Markidis and Botsari.  The team of E.S. Thessalonica (featuring Avrukh, D. & Ath. Mastrovasilis and Tea Bosboom-Lanchava) was second, also with 16 p. (8 wins, one loss – to S.O. Kavalas); the fact that S.O. Kavalas had won the outright match with runners-up E.S. Thessalonica (and by a clear margin: 8.5 – 3.5!) decided the issue of the champion.  Last year’s winners, “Kydon” Hania (the team which boasted five consecutive titles, from 2000 to 2004!) was third, with 15 p. (7 wins, one draw and one loss), despite being the only team that won against S.O. Kavalas.  Top-rated players for “Kydon” Hania were: Azmaiparashvili, Papaioannou, Banikas, Nikolaidis and Grivas.

Coverage in Greek at: http://www.chessfed.gr/teams2005/.  I am also including a ChessBase file with 267 games from the League, mainly those of the higher-rated players.

Best regards, Spiros Ilandzis
