The US Chess League began on Wednesday, August 31st, 2005.  The results of this first round were as follows:

  • Boston - 2     New York - 2

  • Miami - 2.5     Baltimore 1.5

  • Philadelphia - 2.5     Dallas - 1.5

  • Carolina - 2     San Francisco - 2

Thus the Miami Sharks (led by GM Alex Stripunsky - 2663, and including IM Irina Krush - 2445, among others)  & the Philadelphia Masterminds (led by FM Norman Rogers - 2307) have the early lead in the USCL's inaugural season.  The Masterminds pulled off the biggest upset of the round, defeating the much stronger (on paper) Dallas Destiny.  I guess that's why they play the games!  For IM Greg Shahade's report, see Philadelphia pulls off shocking upset, wins 2.5-1.5.  Meanwhile, here's the Board 1 match-up from the Miami Shark's win over the Baltimore Kingfishers:

*  Top two teams from each division qualify for the playoffs. Results are calculated by Total MATCH points. Whoever has the most points in the "W" (win) column, is in the lead in the standings. Total game points are used as a tiebreaker.
**  Each division winner will get draw odds in the first round of the playoffs against the division runner up.

All games are played on the Internet Chess Club, with the following Time Controls:

  • 90 minutes per side with 30 second increment if the start time is before 8:00 EST

  • 60 minutes per side with 30 second increment if the start time is at or after 8:00 EST

Many more details and all the first round games can be found on the USCL's website.  The League is set to play 10 rounds, with a two-round playoff culminating on November 16th for the Championship.
