Hartlaub Gambits
by Clyde Nakamura

The Search for

& Mythical Chess Openings

The Blackburne-Hartlaub Gambit which comes out of the Englund Gambit (1.d4 e5) has the moves:  1.d4 e5 2.dxe5 d6.

There are other opening settings where you can get a similar position to the Blackburne-Hartlaub Gambit.

Lopez-Hartlaub Gambit

This comes out of the Ruy Lopez.  I improvised over the board and played a Blackburne-Hartlaub type of gambit in this opening.  Unfortunately I played one bad move and ended up losing that game.  I dropped a piece.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.d4 d6 6.dxe5 Ng4

Stonewall-Hartlaub Gambit

This one comes out of the Stonewall pawn formation with pawns at d4, e3 & f4.  Normally there is another pawn at c3 in Stonewall positions.

Black Knights Tango – Hartlaub Gambit

Yes, this one comes out of the Black Knights Tango.  White declined to chase blacks knights so I improvised by converting it into a form of the Blackburne-Hartlaub Gambit.
