Unorthodox Opening Heroes
Jonny Hector
From Clyde Nakamura

Jonny Hector

Jonny Hector, 39, is a Swedish chess grandmaster, who has lived in Denmark for more than 10 years after marrying a Danish woman.  He learned chess at the relatively late age of 14, but quickly became a very strong player.  He is an experienced, aggressive, grandmaster with a classical opening repertoire and a fierce attacking style, and is known for playing unusual chess openings.  He has won tournaments in eight nations:  Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, England, Spain, and Hungary, and he has played for Sweden in four chess Olympiads.

Jonny Hector is currently ranked 185th in the world and has an Elo rating of 2570.  He has won a number of tournaments such as the Hellir Open (Reykjavik 1997), Eikrem Memorial  (Gausdal1998), Copenhagen Open (1998), Roskilde Open (1998), Oxford GM-A (cat. XI, 1998), Hamburg Open (2000), Politiken Cup 2000, Solett Open (Skelleftea 2001), IHEM Hamburg (2001) and Swedish-ch (cat. IX, Skara 2002).

Hector is extremely popular in Denmark with his enterprising style of playing and his firm belief that playing chess has to be fun!  His aggressive style is consistent with the Greek hero Hector from Homers epic tale The Iliad.

Opening Repertoire:

King Pawn

  • Vienna Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4

  • Kings Gambit   1.e4 e5 2.f4

  • Sicilian Defense 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.h4 (a strange h4 line)

Queen Pawn

  • Veresov Attack  1.d4 d5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Bg5  He plays a special line with 3…Nbd7 4.Qd3.

  • Reverse Veresov  1.b3 d5 2.Nf3 Bg4

  • Another version of a Reverse Veresov  1.b3 d5 2.Nf3 Bg4

  • A Delayed Albin Counter-Gambit  1.d4 c5 2.c3 cxd4 3.cxd4 d5 4.Nc3 e5

  • Slav Defense  1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 (Hector likes to play the B at c8 to f5 to put the bishop outside of its pawn structure.)

Other UCO

  • Dunst   1.Nc3 (this one probably transposes into a Veresov Attack)

There are probably more unusual opening lines that Jonny Hector plays but this is just a partial list of what openings he does play.
