Annotated Game
Kevin Spraggett - Rafael Montero Campuzano
Seville Open 2001
with notes by
NM Bill McGeary
Spraggett,K (2526) - Montero Campuzano,R (2118)
1.Nf3 Nf6
2.g3 g6 3.b3 Bg7 4.Bb2 d6 5.c4
Old theory
said that the c4 + b3 formation was good against the Kings Indian if
Black had played c6 because of the fragile nature of the d6/e5 chain,
yet frowned on c4 +b3 if Black still had the base at c7. There
were 2 reasons for this; 1- attacking the pawn chain was harder and 2- a
knight on c6 is more active than on d7 or a6. This game won't
change that opinion in general, but will raise some questions.
5...e5 6.d3
00 7.Bg2 Nc6 8.0-0 h6 9.Nc3 Be6 10.e4
White is
looking to play d3-d4 inviting Black to play 10... Nd4 because 11.Nxd4
exd4 12. Ne2 will be advantageous - c5 will be forced from Black and
White can assault the d6,c5,d4 chaining with b3-b4 or look for play with
f4 and e5.
10...Qd7
11.Nd5 Nh7
Clearing the
way for f7-f5, while keeping Nd8 and c6 possible.
12.Qd2
Activating the
heavy pieces, but also making b3-b4 possible. If White goes through with
12.d4 he would probably not be too happy after 12... Bg4 if simply
because the winning possibilities would diminish with exchanges.
12...Rae8
13.Rae1 Nd4 ?!
Black thinks
the exchange on d4 will limit his problems because the pawn structure
will become static and an advance by White on either side can be stifled
- Black will play ...c6 or ...f5 as necessary. The thing is,
Black's structure is static while White will be able to reposition to
take advantage of the cracks that appear. The f4 square is the
start of those ideas.
14.Nxd4
exd4 15.Nf4!
Now c6 will be
met by either Ne2 or Ba3.
15...Ng5
16.Kh1
Eliminates
checks on h3 and frees g1 for a rook.
16...c5
17.Bc1 b5 18.Nxe6 fxe6 19.f4 Nf7 20.Qc2 bxc4?
The Qc2 is
hardly the envy of the gods, so why put her on such a more active
square? Black has been outplayed, but before this the damage was
manageable. After 21.Qxc4 White can practically draw a map to
victory.
21.Qxc4 g5
Trying to
secure e5, but giving up more white squares.
22.Bd2 Kh8
23.Bh3 Qe7 24.b4 e5 25.fxg5 Nxg5 26.Bf5
White's
advantage is that he gets to play on all the squares, while Black is
hard pressed to get anything on a white square. White could try to
load everybody up on the f-, g-, h-files and rumble forward, but likely
it is much easier to slide around to the b-file to get in.
26...Rf6
27.Rb1 Ref8 28.Bxg5
Simple chess:
exchange the two bishops for an ongoing white square initiative and no
play for Black. The Ng5 was the last piece that could defend a
white square easily.
28...hxg5
29.bxc5 dxc5 30.Rb5 Rc6 31.Rc1 Bf6 32.Qd5 Qd6
White didn't
grab 32. Rxc5 because the defence with one rook each and bishops of
opposite colors would offer more chances to Black. Now, the path
is easy.
33.Qxd6
Rxd6 34.Rcxc5 Rf7
Black is lost,
but this hastens the end.
35.Rc8+ Kg7
36.Rbb8 Re7 37.Rg8+ Kh6 38.Rg6+ Kh5 39.g4+ 1-0
A nice game to
see as the opening formations were worked into middlegame plans.
