Checkmate
The object of
the game of chess is to place your opponent’s king in “checkmate.” Doing so
wins the game. Checkmate is a situation which occurs when a king is
currently in check and does not have a legal move which will get him out of
check. Observe the following diagrams, each with a caption indicating
whether or not the current position is checkmate, and why or why not:
Black is checkmated. (The black king cannot move
out of check, there is no way to interpose a piece between the black king
and the white queen, and the black king cannot capture the white queen
because she is protected by the white rook.)
Black is not checkmated. (The black king
can simply capture the white queen.)
Black is not checkmated. (The black king
can simply move one square to the right.)
Black is not checkmated. (The black knight can capture the white queen.)
Black is checkmated. (The black knight cannot capture the white
queen because it is pinned by the white rook (i.e., moving the black knight
is not legal in this position because it would expose the black king to
check by the white rook).)
Black is not checkmated. (The black queen can break check by
placing herself in front of the black king.)
Black is checkmated. (There is no black piece which can interpose
itself between the black king and the white rook.)
