RulesOther DrawsThere are a few other ways the game can end in a draw other than stalemate: 1) Draw due to Insufficient Material: If a position results on the board in which neither player has enough material to checkmate the opposing king (e.g., if one side has only a King and Knight against the opponent’s bare King), the game is a draw. 2) Draw by Three-Fold Repetition of Position: If the exact same position occurs on the board three times during the course of the game, with the same player on the move, and all of the same moves available, the game is a draw upon a correct claim by the player on the move. Note that the position does not have to occur three times immediately in a row. 3) Draw by 50-Move Rule: If both players make 50 moves without either side making a capture or moving a pawn, the game is a draw upon a correct claim by the player on the move. 4) Draw by Agreement: The players can agree to draw at any time during the game. However, it is considered bad form to agree to a draw unless both players objectively believe that the game would eventually result in a draw some other way. Copyright 2002 S. Evan Kreider.
