Battle Chess (Interplay Productions, 1988)

Though not as detailed or fleshed-out a program as Chessmaster, Battle Chess is still a very good chess program, with numerous levels of difficulty. (Even the easiest of which is too hard for me to beat.) What made, and continue to makes, Battle Chess so popular is the fact that, instead of capturing pieces by simply removing them from the board, the pieces, which look like actual people, actually physically kill each other. It's quite interesting to see the King's subterfuge, the queen's magic, or the rooks turn into giant hulking monsters which crush their opponents. Though in essence nothing more than a typical chess game, Battle Chess is very fun to play because of this interesting twist, and I can recommend it to anyone who likes chess games.
