Sid Meier's Civiliziation II (Microprose, 1996)

Though on the surface, Civilization II seems to be just an updated version of Sid Meier's original ground (and record) breaking Civilization, the differences are such that, in the final analysis, the game almost seems to be a new invention. Its graphics and combat controls are considerably improved, and there are a lot more options available for tailoring the game to exactly the way you want to play. If, at times, Civilization II feels slightly less personal or perhaps more manufactured than its predecessor, the additions and expansions present in it render it every bit as much an instant classic. A word of warning, though--this game has the tendency to prove extremely addictive. But, as many strategy gamers--and others who have fallen under its spell--will tell you, there are few more entertaining addictions in the computer gaming realm.
