Silpheed (Sierra, 1988)

Silpheed was a follow-up to Sierra's original blockbuster, Thexder, though with improved graphics and sound support. Though the plot was very simple, and the game was little more than a shoot-em-up, it was still very entertaining, and could be quite challenging. With multiple types of weapons that could be used in varying combinations, configuring your ship correctly to get through a given level was usually the hardest part. The game's final battle was very difficult and time-consuming, requiring much replay and advanced strategy. If you enjoy space shoot-em-up games, Silpheed is one of the best. Even if you don't, however, you'll probably still have a blast.
