Ultima (California Pacific Computers/On-Line Systems/Origin, First Released 1980)

Despite the obvious limitations of the technology that existed at the time, Richard Garriott and the others behind the original Ultima did not settle for creating a "joke" product--though the series still had a long ways to go, it was a serious and substantial game that still does hold up today. Despite the wall-to-wall graphics (for the time), there was still plenty of room for an interesting story, lots of quests, and a world more expansive than one might expect from a game that came on one low-density 5.25 inch disk. Though technological advancements in graphics, sound, and interface would later render this game more of a curiosity and a "period" piece, there are still many reasons for wanting to play the original Ultima--the beginning of an impressive series of impressive games.
