FAITH FOCUS: Juana
Their
community lacked many of the basic essentials such as clean water, roads and
houses, so Juana’s husband led many initiatives to combat these problems. This
attracted the attention of the armed groups, who wanted to recruit him because
of his skills and influence. He refused, saying “neither guerrilla nor
paramilitary is the alternative to what this village needs to develop.”
One
day, at 1am, an armed group arrived at their house. Juana felt terrified. Her
husband went out to meet them and she heard them say, “We’re going to hang you.”
The
men take her husband away, and Juana then heard gunshots. She was
terrified that they would come back for her and her
children. She went to a neighbor’s house and stayed there until 5am. Later, two
Christian men went out and found the body of Juana’s husband.
“What
hurts me,” Juana says, “is that my dreams, his dreams, his hopes, his plan for
his life have been taken away.” Juana and her two children were displaced and
destitute after this. In 2003, they were taken into a children’s home. They now
continue to fight to recover their lives: a home, a place of refuge and healing.
Juana dreams of being a psychologist or social worker. She says, “I don’t want
to forget what’s behind me. I under stand that this is a time of God, and that
God is with me. I want to for get in God’s own time.”
Indirectly, Juana managed to discover who was responsible for her husband’s
death. Now she feels compelled to find the perpetrator, hand him a Bible and
tell him that she for gives him.
Please pr ay for healing in Juana’s life.
