Yugoslav Attack vs Pirc Defense?

Sort:
adamWheatley

I'm learning to play as white against the Pirc Defense. The Pirc looks a lot like the Sicilian Dragon. So can the Yugoslav Attack also be used on the Pirc Defense?

You can play the Austrian Attack with White pawns at e4,d4 and f4.

The Yugoslav Attack does not translate.  No such transpositions are possible.

What are some other openings vs. the Pirc? It is my friends favorite and I need to learn to crush him!

There a number of ways White can play against the Pirc:

Classical system (Be2) - protect the center

Another popular line is the early h3 (which prevents Bg4) followed by Bg5 - also protecting the center

Perhaps the sharpest line is the Austrian Attack (pawns at d4, e4, and f4)

Try 1: d4 instead of 1: e4, this is the most direct way of playing an anti-Pirc, no?

Assuming we know that black will play the Pirc, then d4 would make sense going into the Saemish variation perhaps. But what about if white is an e4 player and black goes into the Pirc? I've never played the Austrian Attack, but it does look like it would give the Pirc Defense some trouble.
