Wounded police dog kept up job before dying

American? Mexicans, if that's what you mean, are Americans. Remember the U.S. and Mexico are both part of North America, and we also have Central and South Americans.  (May 11, 2007 | post #38)

Companion dog's job in jeopardy

But they did not. What other recourse did she havve? And why is the onus soley on her to be the "adult" one? If she offered the dog's ID, any further persistence from her could be perceived by the guard as arguing or disobeying his order. I think she did the right thing. A SCHOOL of all places should know better!  (Apr 25, 2007 | post #188)

I can't believe you would make this statement if you really knew anything about he sport. The Indiana market and the Kentucky market are worlds apart, and each serves their own niche. There generally is not a mixing of these two markets, and they certainly do not compete with one another.  (Apr 25, 2007 | post #59)

Horsemen and horses around here would have a very hard time competing effectively in Kentucky. That is the top tier of the sport. But it's the bread-and-butter runners through the week that make up the bulk of horse racing. Race horse owning, for most, should be considered a hobby, because it is usually not profitable. People who can afford to won race horses because they love the game, the animal, and the tradition, not because they want to get rich. HOWEVER, the trainers, riders, grooms, jockeys, hot walkers, grain suppliers, hay growers, tack shop owners, farriers, bloodstock agents, auctioneers, etc. ARE part of the horse racing INDUSTRY. See Merriam Webster's definition of industry: "a distinct group of productive or profit-making enterprises." All of the aforementioned are essentially laborers working for profit...and yes, some owners, those who raise their own horses instead of paying someone else to, do fall in to this category as well. The cost of a truck/trailer an investment no different than a small business owner buying a store front. The investment in equipment is made with the understanding it will be recouped with earnings at the track.  (Apr 25, 2007 | post #58)

'I never should have been in jail'

Who the hell do you think you are? What if this was you? What if this was your kid? You don't know this person. Some great leaders, innovators, and examples of human beings have done wrong and later redeemed themselves. I stretch, maybe, but really, you don't know. Regardless, I don't want to live in a country where we put people away for crimes for which they are innocent just because they aren't "upstanding citizens." That's not what prison is for.  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #154)

There is absolutely no basis for Ms. Underwood's proposition that the dogs are an allergy hazard. IN FACT, there is strong evidence the presence of these dogs would HELP ALLERGIES: "Cleanliness not necessarily healthy" USA Today http://www.usatoda y.com/news/health/ 2006-06-16-sanitiz ed_x.htm Not to mention the positive intangible, emotional benefits. I hope Carmel parents will put their foot down on this!  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #63)

Awesome. Too bad most people probably didn't read it because it's more than five sentences long. Yeah, I'm getting a little cynical here after reading this depressing comment string. This has gotta be one of the worst.  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #677)

No, I'd rather stay in my country and fight for what it could be, rather than what it is. Ironically, since you like absolute rule so much I'd think you'd enjoy a place like China. Oh wait - only if the rule follows your rules.  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #578)

'I never should have been in jail'

To everyone who thinks like this, this reasoning is what causes wrongful convictions in the first place! Jurists assume the person question must have done SOMETHING wrong or they wouldn't be on trial. WRONG WRONG WRONG - and destroying lives and families. Read Dave Eggers' "Surviving Justice: America's Wrongfully Convicted and Exonerated" - first hand accounts from exonerated people of how this sort of thing happens. It DOES happen, and so egregiously you'd be amazed. http://www.amazon. com/Surviving-Just ice-Wrongfully-Con victed-Exonerated/ dp/1932416234/ref= pd_bbs_sr_1/103-15 33083-1551023?ie=U TF8&s=books &qid=117743262 4&sr=8-1  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #125)

I stand corrected - IGWT is the U.S. national motto currently. Whether EPU was or was not officially an earlier motto, is apparently open for debate. Some sources say yes, some no. I do know that EPU has appeared on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782. However, as noted countless times in these posts, IGWT is on our currency. All that tells me is that our government has not always and does not currently honor its obligation to maintain separation of church and state. Anyway, my apologies for incorrectly correcting you. I should have done better research, indeed.  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #530)

Stable future?

To those who say let horse racing die if it can't support itself, I say that Hoosier Park WAS supporting itself until Indiana Downs was granted license. The state messed up there. Why should the whole industry and all the Hoosier associated with it be allowed to slowly atrophy into nonexistence as a result? And to Mr. Verity and others who say that the racing industry would not provide a positive economic impact to the state, I'm not sure you realize the benefit of investing in creating a regionally/nationa lly prominent racing industry. Not only would it help beef up local involvement and investment, but it would also attract many trainers, owners, and investors from out of state. These folks travel to where the big races and purses are, and this has an immediate and long-term trickle down effect. Additionally, there are many, many industries related to horse racing. I find it hard to believe any Hoosier is against supporting something that would mean more jobs. Yeah, working as a stable hand may not pay a lot. But what about the owner of the feed store who sees increased sales, can expand, hire more staff, send his kids to college, etc. More jobs are a good thing. Regarding the casinos, horse racing was here first and if they suffer as a result I will feel little sadness for any loss except for potential loss of jobs. But the majority of casino jobs are direct - people working for the casino itself. Yeah maybe the food service vendor might feel a dent, but come on. The horse racing industry, as mentioned, provides many jobs indirectly. Many other industries and services are supported by horse racing. As far as the degrading effects of horse racing, I think the few horsemen on here have done an excellent job attesting to the family-oriented nature of being involved in this business. Families working together for their farm, and families enjoying time spent at the races.  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #52)

Planned turkey farms worries neighbors

So if we hadn't killed them in the 1800s they'd still be trotting around out back of the Piggly Wigglys of Nebraska? Peaceably munching grass alongside cattle without raising farmers' ire, not pooping on anyone's lawns, eating only the weeds that might grow between the rows of corn? Look at mustangs. They get rounded up by the BLM and sold at auction mostly to slaughterhouses because farmers don't want them competing for RESOURCES.  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #85)

I would think a law professor would know that the national motto is "e pluribus unum" not "in god we trust." p.s. "E pluribus unum" is latin for "one from many," in case your j.d. program didn't include any latin lessons.  (Apr 24, 2007 | post #384)
