Cornyn wants drilling in oceans, Arctic refuge and more of West

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn called for more oil and gas drilling, lower taxes and a new system to finance the federal highway system during a stop here Tuesday.

"We know the failure of the United States to develop our own God-given natural resources has made us intolerably dependent on foreign oil," Cornyn, a Republican, told a crowd at a Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce lunch at the Petroleum Club.

Abramoff sentences looming?

There's quiet buzz in Washington this week that convicted GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff and several colleagues—including scam-artist Michael Scanlon—will be sentenced soon for their roles in the 2005 tribes-and-bribes scandal. These rumors have circulated before, so perhaps it's the natural gossip of idle politicos during the Capitol's dog days. Number of uninsured drops; poverty holds steady

The number of people without health insurance fell by more than 1 million in 2007, the first annual decline since the Bush administration took office, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

And while the number of uninsured dropped to 45.7 million, down from 47 million in 2006, it was largely because more people were covered through government programs.

Forest Service diverts money to pay for wildfires

The cost of fighting large fires in California and elsewhere is forcing the U.S. Forest Service to divert hundreds of millions of dollars set aside for work including roads, trails, recreational improvements - even fire prevention.

In a memo this month to regional foresters, Forest Service Chief Abigail Kimbell said spending on fires could reach $1.6 billion this year, about half the agency's budget.
