Adrian BeltreBeltre has decided to undergo thumb and shoulder surgeries next week and will make his final appearance of the season on Sunday. He has continued to play despite a torn ligament in his left thumb, and carried a 15-game hitting streak - the longest active streak in the majors - into Saturday night's game against the Angels. Beltre, in the fourth year of a five-year, $64 million contract, said Saturday that he had decided to have the surgery so he can be 100 percent by spring training.
Nate McLouthMcLouth was 3-for-4 with a home run, a career-high five RBIs and three runs scored in the Pirates' 10-2 win over St. Louis on Friday night. McLouth, who reached base five times, finished a single short of the cycle. He hit a two-run home run in the third, a three-run double in the fifth and a triple in the sixth.
Brandon LyonChad Qualls has replaced Lyon as the Arizona closer as the Diamondbacks try to stay in the NL West race over the final two weeks of the season. Lyon has an 11.57 ERA since the All-Star break, allowing 21 runs in 16 1-3 innings. He gave up two runs in the ninth in a 4-3 loss at San Francisco on Wednesday. Lyon, who has 26 saves in 31 opportunities, understood the move, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. ?All he wants to do is help the team win,? the manager said. ?In that respect, he took it like a pro.?
Chad QuallsQualls has replaced struggling Brandon Lyon as the Arizona closer as the Diamondbacks try to stay in the NL West race over the final two weeks of the season. The right-handed Qualls has been the best pitcher out of an otherwise shaky bullpen of late. He has not allowed a run in 17 of his last 18 appearances and has a 1.02 ERA since the All-Star break. ?He?s picked up a lot of confidence,? manager Bob Melvin said in announcing the change before the Diamondbacks played Cincinnati on Saturday.

Chuck JamesJames will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a tear in his rotator cuff on Friday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. James, who went 2-5 with a 9.10 ERA in seven starts in the majors this year, is hoping to return during the second half of the 2009 season.
Tim WakefieldWakefield bounced back from his shortest outing of the season to match the longest, allowing only three hits in eight innings of Boston's 7-0 win over Toronto on Friday night. Wakefield gave up seven runs in 1 2-3 innings of a loss to Texas in his last start Saturday. He's 9-10 with a 3.92 ERA in 27 starts this season, including 6-4 with a 3.08 ERA in 12 games at Fenway Park.
Mitch MaierMaier went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his return from the disabled list Saturday. Maier hadn't played since Aug. 20, when he was hit below the right eye by a pitch from the Indians' Zach Jackson. In 20 games in the majors this season, Maier is batting .333 (20-for-60) with four RBIs and six runs scored.
Chris CarpenterAccording to MLB.com, the Cardinals have shut down Carpenter for the rest of the season because of a muscle strain in the right-hander's throwing shoulder. Carpenter will finish his latest injury-plagued season 0-1 with a 1.76 ERA in four games - three starts. He has pitched in only five games since the 2006 season because of Tommy John surgery and shoulder problems.
Milton BradleyBradley was ejected, then held back from a further argument in the fourth inning of Saturday's game against Oakland. Bradley grounded into a double play, but thought he beat the relay throw. He argued with first base umpire Angel Campos and kept exchanging words while leaving the field. Moments later, Campos signaled an ejection - Bradley's fourth of the year. Bradley, who has been bothered by a lower back sprain, sprinted back from the dugout back onto the field and yelled at Campos, before first base coach Gary Pettis stepped between them.
Michael CuddyerCuddyer was activated from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday?s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles, and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he would only use him as an emergency pinch-hitter for now. Cuddyer went on the disabled list with a strained tendon in his left index finger June 30, then broke his left foot during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 8 when he was hit by teammate Garrett Jones? line drive. He was hitting .252 with three homers and 35 in 62 games before the injuries. Gardenhire said Cuddyer was "about 60, 70 percent" and would have to be pinch-run for if he reached base because he can?t run full-speed without pain.
Evan LongoriaLongoria returned to the Rays' starting lineup for the opener of a day-night doubleheader against the New York Yankees on Saturday. Longoria broke his wrist when he was hit by a pitch on Aug. 7. He was activated last Saturday, but was held out of the starting lineup for a week while continuing his rehabilitation. Longoria, one of the AL Rookie of the Year frontrunners, is hitting .278 with 22 homers and 71 RBIs.
