{{NPOV}} Established in 1920 as "Government Reseasch Institute, Cownpore", '''Harcourt Butler Technological Institute''', Kanpur is one of the best Engineering colleges in northern India. On 25th of November, 1921 the then Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler (1869 - 1938), K.C.S.I., C.I.E., formally laid the foundation of the present building. It was rechristened "Government Technological Institute" in 1921. Finally, in 1926, it got the name of "Harcourt Butler Technological Institute". HBTI is the oldest technology institute in Uttar Pradesh. In 1960, when Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was established, for many years, IIT classes were held in HBTI. Till 1970, HBTI was also conducting course in Sugar Technology, Glass Technology and Textiles. Subsequently, 4 new institutes - National Sugar Institute, Govt Central Textile Institute and Glass Institute. ==Courses Offered== The Institute offers offers 13 B-tech courses in differnt fields of engineering including Chemical, Electronic, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Computer Science Engineering and Chemical Technology (Biomedical Engineering, Food, Oil & Paints and Plastics Technology). In addition to bachelor level qualifications, M.Tech., MBA and MCA courses are also available.
