geraldo8187: on mtv's tv guide for their shows, they spell genius with an extra vowel "genious". ironic, eh?

geraldo8187: did anybody else watch his program? he seemed quite full of himself, although i'm pretty sure mtv skewed things to look that way. his training regiment and goal to be number one in the world are both quite admirable. best of luck, var.

JointheArmy: Does anyone have a link to this? This is the best thing MTV has created since well ever. FUSE > MTV.
Mar-09-07   Waffles: I'm watching it right now. Interesting show.

whiskeyrebel: I just saw the MTV profile tonight. I enjoyed it quite a bit. He owns one nice damn car. There's a lot to admire about Var. He's ambitious and goal driven. Good for him. He seems like the sort of person you'd want to be stranded on an Island with or stuck in an elevator. He'd probably find a way to save you. ARMENIA, which of his friends were you? His hotel room mate?

Davolni: can anybody let me know how I can watch MTV program about Akobian??? is it possible to find that programm online in some archives???? THANKS

whiskeyrebel: MTV repeats shows over and over and over and over..so I'd check your cable listings. I'll be doing that..I want to see it again.

Davolni: Thanks Whiskey. I was hoping to get that in MTV.com archives, but I guess I can't. I will try to find it in the program list, but i don't even have time to watch TV. Specially MTV, where 99% of the programs are stupid reality shows, that don't make any sense whatsoever. (sorry MTV lovers)

Davolni: Nice show by MTV. We should say thanks to MTV by making that TRUE LIFE show. Good luck to Varuzhan Akobian.
he is in top 10 in the US team. But probably in April list he may go up too in the list. Nice job....

Resignation Trap: GM Akobian has his own official site: http://www.akobian.com . Perhaps http://www.chessgames.com can contact him for permission to use one of his photos for our site.
Jun-10-07   Phoenix: GM Akobian is playing in the Las Vegas tournament along with 18 other strong GMs, including Korchnoi, Shabalov (current US Champ), Nakamura etc.

Anyway, Akobian had black against Friedel in round 3. Right when I thought black had sweated out a draw, he resigned! Below is the final position with black to move:

click for larger view

Now the Monroi site shows that Akobian had about a minute left, so it's possible he even lost on time. Here are the variations:

80...Bc3 81.Be8 (the bishop is poorly placed, as sometimes white cannot push his pawns due to the black king taking the bishop) 81...Bb2 82.h6 initially this looks winning (82.f6 Bxf6 83.h6 Bb2 84.h7 Kh6=) 82...Kxh6 83.f6 Kg5! 84.f7 Ba3 and draws.

Or white can try 81.Kf7 Kh6 (not the only move) 82.f6 Kg5 83.Be4 Kxh5 84.Ke7 Kh6 85.f7 Bb4+ 86.Ke8 Kg7=

There are also some lines where white moves his K to the queenside and gives up his h-pawn for the b6 pawn (by distracting the bishop) but then the bishop returns to c3 with an easy draw.

Jun-10-07   argishti: Davolni, yes chem tese. vorteghe, yes oozoomem ditel.
Jul-09-07   pawnofdoom: Congrats Akobian on winning the World Open. Someone should put that into his player biography.

whiskeyrebel: Another bronze medal! Thanks for your fine performance on the U.S. team Mr. Akobian. Playing "board five" isn't always all that glamorous perhaps, but it's a vital role obviously. 4 out of 6 is a good score.
