kellmano: By the way, I am a big Karpov fan, and though i wasn't into chess at the times of the WC matches, I retrospectively admire Karpov far more than the other K - the capatilist pig-dog now interested in politics :-)

kellmano: Cheers for that <resignation trap> Every bit as interesting as i'd hoped.

I have always thought that Spassky was one of the most stylish chessplayers to have ever played.

  malthrope: Hey <kellmano>! :)

Things are quickly heating up in the Amber 'Rapids & Blindfold' kitchen! ~lol~- It's just a mere few days away now! <can you believe it?> :)

Not to mention some interesting Blindfold discussions going on at - Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament (2008) - on page -5-... Also, posted my reply to your post in my Chessforum here: - malthrope chessforum - Go Sasha GO! :))

Thanks <Resignation Trap> - those were great posts <"Ya gotta light, mac?"> with links to match! ;)

<kellmano: [...] I have always thought that Spassky was one of the most stylish chessplayers to have ever played.>

I've met him many times (from 1966 to 2006) and each time he was <impressive> as ever! ;))

kellmano: Hello Warmaster Kron. If you still come here, there is tournament next weekend (the first in April) at which i'm playing in Hitchin/Letchworth. Easy to get to from London and there's a team competition as well. It's on the Sunday 40 minutes all moves. Let me know if you can make it and we'll make a team. Anyone else interested is welcome as well.

(tryed Kron's forum but he hasn't got one)

white to play and win.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <kellmano> They're called studies, not puzzles :) Anyway, the immediate 1.g5 Nxc5 2.g6 Ne6 fails because the knight, protected at e6, stops the g-pawn with Black's king taking care of the d-pawn, so the solution should be 1.c6+! Kxd6 2.c7! Kxc7 3.g5 Nc5 (from this point on, Black has alternatives, but with the king no longer guarding e6 they don't help) 4.g6 Nd7+ 5.Ke7 Ne5 6.g7 Nc6+ 7.Kf6 and 8.g8Q. White sacrifices both of his queenside pawns to chase Black's king away from defending e6. Neat enough.

kellmano: <SwitchingQuylthulg> correct well done. BEing as you are an expert (knowing to call them studies:)), my recurring thought is a position like this:

when white would play Nh1 and force black to capture with teh king and be checkmated by the sole bishop. That's the theme i want, dunno if it's possible.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <kellmano> Interesting theme. Here's a little extension to it:

1.Nh5! Coolly saccing the knight on h1 is the only way to win. At least I hope like hell that this is so. 1...Kxh1 2.Nxg3+ Kg2 3.Nh1!! Another knight goes to the corner. Now 3...Kxh1 doesn't work because of 4.Kf1 and sooner or later the bishop makes it to the diagonal, mating. Thus 3...Bxe3 4.Kxe3 d5 (from this point on I'm nothing like sure...) 5.Bxe6 d4+ 6.Ke2 d3+ 7.Ke3 (the king must not leave the e-file, as else Black can afford taking on h1) Kg1 8.Bd7 d2 9.Bg4 and I think White should win this somehow.

I don't have the slightest proof this really works as intended but I can't disprove it and it looks cute ;-)

mack: <kellmano> Have you picked up the new Magnetic Fields album yet? 'The Nun's Litany' really jumped out on first listen.

kellmano: <mack> much as i love the magnetics, events have overtaken me and i haven't bought it yet. Didn't know you were a fan. I'll go and buy the new album now. Playing at golders green blitz this saturday if you fancy it. Ten thirty start.

mack: <kellmano> What-ho mate. I'm afraid I plan to take lots of drugs on Saturday, and as such will be unable to come to the blitzathon. But I'm playing the upcoming Ilford congress, if you're interested...

kellmano: Drugs eh? Make sure you enjoy yourself thoroughly. Can't play in Ilford for two reasons: 1. Don't want to commit a whole weekend to a longplay tourney at this point in my life. 2. Don't want to go to Essex.

Hope you have a good one though, <Mack>

Obviously could easily be done with tablebase, but is not too difficult to solve without and quite aesthetically pleasing.

Oh, white to play and win.

May-24-08   Rod Serling: kellmano: Did you ever get to play Mr. Ed? I heard he was good with his Knights. ; P

WarmasterKron: Hello, stranger. How's things? Fancy a game?

I seem to have been lured back to chess somehow and I'm playing more unsound rubbish than ever before.

WarmasterKron: I should be about on the 7th/8th for Staunton, as I'm on leave that week. I meant to go last year, but couldn't get away from work.

Btw, there's nothing wrong with 4.Nxf7 vs. the Petroff - just ask Topalov.

kellmano: I'm going to the Staunton memorial on the 8th if anyone fancies a game of blitz and a pint in the bar. It is free....

WarmasterKron: <mack> I'd be able to make the rounds on the 16th and 17th, otherwise I'll be working.

  mack: Wickedo. 16th, then?

WarmasterKron: I arrived at Simpsons quite late on the 8th, so I must have missed you. I didn't hang around that long, either.

I did meet up with mack on the 16th, though. Played a few casual games in the bar and managed to win a single game - against a 7 year old boy.

kellmano: <Kron> It's a well known fact that 7 year old boys are the hardest to beat.
Sep-06-08
Premium Chessgames Member
WarmasterKron: They're easier to beat than mack - for a start they don't tend to play sodding 1...g6!
