| Checkmate123: For black, I don't think you have to play 1...e5 or 1...c5. You can just transpose to the queen's gambit declined by playing Nf6 and e6. So I guess you don't really have to play the English as black if you don't want to. |

| acirce: I play the KID against 1. c4. |

| iron maiden: So do I, or at least I try to. |

| Dudley: I think thats a good approach -just play your regular defense to QP openings. It's kind of illogical to play 1...e5 unless you normally play the open Sicilian as white and want to transpose into similar positions with reversed colors. |

| EnglishOpeningc4: well, not all the Queen pawn defenses work against c4. the KID defenitly does, and that is what i use. dont try the grunfeld or the nimzo as 3e4! is possible in both of those |
|
Dec-04-04 |
| tacticsjokerxxx: does the KID really work against 1.c4? white is by no means forced to transpose with d4, white can play d3, e3 and/or g3. In blitz games i play 1.-Nc6 against 1.c4. |

| dasp3edd3m0n: 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3. d3 c6
I don't think this approach to English is very popular but does white play e4 in this situation? This opening has always looked advantageous for black...any suggestions? |

| dasp3edd3m0n: 4. e4 d5**
Then what? |
|
Apr-03-05
|
| tpstar: <dasp3edd3m0n> Your line is not in the database - more common would be 4. Nf3 d6 5. g3 Opening Explorer giving Black a good game. After 4. e4!? d5 Black looks great and has probably equalized already. |

| refutor: anything for white to play other than 2.Nc3 or 2.g3? can i get away with playing 1.c4 e5 2. ..f5 everytime? |

| Ron: <refutor> I think that Tartakower once played 1. c4 and 2. a3. |

|
| refutor: <dont try the grunfeld or the nimzo as 3e4! is possible in both of those > how? i don't think that 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e4 is particularly strong |
|
Jun-25-05 |
| vampiero: im gonna have to agree with refutor here, as someone who likes the grunfeld, i cant say that e4 is a real thretening move, its better for white players to think your playing the KID and go c4 Nf6 d4 g6 Nc3 and then you hit then with the grunfeld d4 |

| BiLL RobeRTiE: <vampiero> Congratulations, your last post made no sense at all and contained a grade-school spelling error. You wouldn't happen to be friends with Knight13, would you? |

| EnglishOpeningc4: <how? i don't think that 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e4 is particularly strong> im sorrry, i should've been more clear
1 c4 Nf6
2 Nc3 g6
3 e4 is strong
1 c4 Nf6
2 Nc3 d5 (blacks only hope of a grunfeld)
3 e4?! isnt strong |

| Averageguy: Here's a game I played in this line as black last weekend and I'd be interested to have some comments on it. White: Jamal M J Raja
Black: Julius D Schwartz
Date: 2/4/'06
Event: Edinburgh Chess Congress Major (U-1700)
Round: 4
Board: 3
White Elo: 1627
Black Elo: -
1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nc6 3.Bg2 f5 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.d3 d6 6.e4 Be7 7.Nge2 0-0 8. 0-0 Nh5
(My opening is a bit tangled so I decided to go for broke) 9.Nd5 g5 10.exf5 Bxf5 11.Nec3 Ng7 12.Ne4 h6 13.Be3 Ne6 (My opening's been a bit of a mess but I somehow manage to make it work) 14.h4 Kg7 15.Qd2 Kg6 16.Nxe7+ Qxe7 17.hxg5 hxg5 18.f3 Rh8 19.Nc3 Bh3 20.Nd5 Qg7 21.a3 Ncd4 22.Qd1 Kf7 23.Kf2 Bxg2 24.Kxg2 Nf4+ 25.Nxf4 exf4 26.Bf2 fxg3 27.Bxd4 Rh2+ 28.Kg1 g2 29.Kxh2 g1Q+ 30.Rxg1 Rh8# |

| tpstar: <Averageguy> Nice game! I also play that line Game Collection: tpstar C4 which tends to throw White off their game. You might consider 5 ... Bb4 as one way to reduce White's pressure on d5, also to prevent your Bishop from congesting your own position. Another advantage of ... Bxc3 is that Black can play ... Qe8 safely to get over to the Kingside while there's no threat of Nxc7 anymore G Milos vs Smyslov, 1990 . 9 ... g5!? is bold but also gains space on the Kingside, then 11 ... Ng7 was very good and chances were equal. You took over the initiative at 18 ... Rh8 & 19 ... Bh3 and played a nice attack. Note Move 25 should be 25 ... gxf4 instead. The concluding sequence was outstanding, and here's the final position: click for larger view |

| Tsmoss: Me and a friend of mine have been analyzing the line 1. c4 e5 2. f4, which we've been calling the Heavy Metal Gambit. I've found only one database that has any games with it, all played online between amateurs, all with 2 ... exf4, and all wins for white. I've been looking at it for about six weks now, and we spent about an hour and a half together last night trying to crack it, but we haven't found a line yet that wins Black any advantage. Any ideas? |
|
Aug-16-06 |
| NateDawg: <Tsmoss> Your "Heavy Metal Gambit" seems somewhat similar to the King's Gambit. You may want to check C33-C40 to get some ideas. A possible line is 1. c4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. f3 g5 4. h4 g4 5. e5 d6 6. a4+ c6 7. d3 e7 8. xf4 9. xh4+ d1. This seems to be slightly inferior to the King's Gambit because White cannot attack the Black pawn at g4 with his Queen, and Black is free to kick around the White Knight. |
|
Aug-16-06 |
| jamesmaskell: I dont really like the look of the Heavy Metal Gambit. White cannot castle, Black isnt really that over-extended and can recover. What do the engines see? Nice try, but Im not convinced. |
|
Aug-16-06 |
| Tsmoss: 4. h4 doesn't accomplish anything at all. Why not just push the lead in developemnt with Nc3 or d4 or something like that? |

| Swapmeet: <Tsmoss>
4.Nc3 would lose to 4...g4.
4.d4 would run into a nasty queen check after 4...g4. 4.h4 may not be white's best here but it has it's logical points, pressuring black's kingside and preventing and future queen checks should black play g4. The pawn on c4 here looks very illogical to me. If a game started out 1.f4 e5, would you really want to play 2.c4? It occupies the square normally reserved for the f1 bishop in this type of opening, and limits the scope of said piece. It seems black can just play in the style of a KGA, with white having somewhat fewer options. Perhaps you could post some of your own analysis for us to go over? |

| yanez: I like the line 1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nc6 3.Bg2 g6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5.e4 d6 6.Nge2 then 7.d3 and 8.0-0 |
|
Aug-29-06 |
| yanez: I also like the line 1.d3 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c4 Nf6 4.a3 |

|
| Domdaniel: Nice lines <yanez> but sadly real-life opponents aren't always so compliant.
I once went through a tournament opening with 1.e3 (Van't Kruijs Opening) generally transposing to an English with c4 or Nimzo-Larsen with b3. I was also, I guess, trying to show off and act weird. It worked, too: I won one game in 14 moves when my opponent got confused. But in the crunch last-round game I was met with 1.e3 g6! 2.c4 f5!, ending up in a not-great variation of the Leningrad Dutch. I'd been out-prepared, and then outplayed. I stick to 1.Nf3 now. You can still transpose to an English later, but you avoid the lines where Black plays ...e5 and ...f5. |
