| Augalv: Russian Team Championship 2008 9th Round
Morozevch Alexander - Ponomariov Ruslan, Russian Team Championship 2008, 9th Round.1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a5 6.f3 e5 7.Nb3 Be6 8.Be3 Nbd7 9.Qd2 b5 10.g4 Usually White goes for long castle here.
10..b4 11.Ne2?! ( diagram )
This game teaches us that this is a bad move.11.Nd5 is much better. click for larger view..h6!
Great move! Stopping White thematic g5, now he can push a5-a4 or d5.What can White do? Good question! 11.Qxb4 is out of the question because of 11..d5 seizing the initiative.11.0-0-0 runs into 11..a5, on 11.Ng3 Black can choose between 11..a5 or 11..d5. 12.g5 hxg5 13.Bxg5 a5 14.Ng3 a4 15.Nc1 Qb6
Black is already better, White has coordination of a car crash. 16.Be3 Qb7 17.Bg2 Rc8 18. Nd3 d5 19.exd5 Nxd5 ( diagram ) click for larger view20.f4?
Mistake in calculation? 20.Bf2 is probably better.
20..Rxc2! 21.Bxd5 Rxd2 22.Bxb7 Rxd3 23.f5??
Blunder.23.Bd2 is better, still chances are on Black's side. 23..Rxe3+ 24.Kd2 Rxg3 25.fxe6 Rgh3 26.exd7+ Kxd7 27.Rhf1 Rxh2+ 28.Kd3 f6 ( diagram ) click for larger viewThree pawn up plus attack.That's a lot.

| freeman8201: Who was Ponomariov teacher? He died and that is why Ponomariov does not play anymore? |
Apr-18-08
| zoat22: i believe that it was his namesake, Boris Ponomariov (no relation) although i might be mistaken |
Apr-19-08 |
| Nouvelle: no, his name was Mikhail Ponomariov. He died in 2004, if my memory is OK. And what do you mean by "he does not play"? Of course he plays! If his games are not so steadily successful as they were at 18, thatīs one thing, but Ponomariov still plays and he can play very beautiful games, i.e. his win against Morozevich in the Russian League. |
Apr-26-08
| Knight13: He can play as beautiful as he wants but he's not gonna get in with the Top Elites (Linares, Dortmund, Corus group A people) at least for a while. |
Apr-27-08
| positionalgenius: <knight13> That was a harebrained comment.
1.He's been to Linares twice and corus several times.
2.Has a 2700+ rating... isn't that corus GRP A people,dortmund people?
3.Has posted many victories over top players.
Now,if you are discussing Ponomariov's placement among the top players in the world, say the top-5,then yes he isn't there because he isn't consistent. But he certainly has the talent to be. |
Apr-27-08
| Knight13: <positionalgenius> Then he needs to work harder. Although he's been to Linares Corus he isn't like others who's been there like over 10 times. |
Apr-27-08 |
| cotdt: i understand that right now he's kamsky's 2nd in baku, but what about for the kamsky-topalov match? isn't ponomariov part of team danailov? |
Apr-27-08
| positionalgenius: <knight13> I suppose you are the final judge of this matter, right?
<<<<<"...he isn't like others who have been there like over 10 times...">>>>>> Um,I suppose you are referring to kasparov, anand or ivanchuk? They are legends of the game. I don't see why you feel the need to belittle his achievments. |
Apr-27-08
| lorker: <cotdt> really, hes kamskys second??? where did you hear that? and no ponomariov is not part of the danailov team. <knight13> why comment on ponomariov's page if you don't even know anything of his achievements? if you want to insult him, at least get your facts about him right. |
Apr-27-08
| positionalgenius: <lorker> That is coming from our beloved <knight13>,who once made the infamous quote <<<<<pawns are better than rooks in the end-game. so its gonna be a check or pawn-kill. nice drawn game>>>>> in 2004. Hilarious kibitz. |
Apr-28-08 |
| Nouvelle: <lorker> People have known about Pono being Kamskyīs second in Baku since the beginning, because Aazerisport (if Iīm not mistaken) put it in its website. It was also commented on Kamskyīs chessgames kibitz page and yesterday some webpages such as chessvibes also mentioned it http://www.chessvibes.com/tournamen... (read bottom of the article). As lorker said, Pono isnīt part of the Danailov team. Danailov was his manager at some point, and Topalov helped him prepare for Kasparov-Ponomariov, but thatīs all. And about his level, yeah I think his wins are a little unstable but he only needs to get that straight and hopefully we can see him in Corus next year. |
May-29-08 |
| Nouvelle: Tomorrow June 30th a rapid chess tournament starts in Odessa, Ukraine. Players are, among others, Karpov, Korchnoi, Ponomariov and Eljanov. More info at official site: http://worldcup.pivdenny.com/ru/ind.... Itīs in Russian so I will try to put the main results here. |
May-29-08 |
| Nouvelle: Correction: Eljanov doesnīt play, Boris Gelfand does |
May-30-08 |
| Xeroxx: He looks exactly like Nikolai Burlyayev from the movie Andrei Rublev, in that picture. Ok, not really a good picture of Nikolai but I couldnt find any better

May-30-08 |
| Nouvelle: Wow, I donīt know that Nikolai, but he sure looks cute :) Iīm going to download the film! OK todayīs results: Ponomariov and Drozsdovski share 1st place with 4/5. Gelfand is 2nd with 3,5/5 and Tregubov is 3rd with 3/5 |
Jun-01-08 |
| Nouvelle: 2nd day results: Gelfand, Ponomariov and Drozsdovski share 1st with 7/10. 2nd are Karpov and Tregubov with 6/10. Letīs see what the 3rd and last day brings. |

Aug-22-08
| lorker: great game today! I hope he can win the Tal Memorial |
Aug-22-08 |
| Nouvelle: well at least heīs doing quite good on his first classical chess tourney in a long time. I would like to see him win, but just being in the first halgf of the board would be quite good already. Go Pono! |
Aug-26-08
| lorker: It seems to me like in the Tal Memorial Ponomariov is playing more like the old Ponomariov; his games have all been very hard fought and he is trying to grind out small advantages. Apart from his game with Morozevich he has played extremely nice games, and has been better in pretty much all of his games. |
Aug-26-08
| apple pi: Yes - he had a slight advantage in his game with Ivanchuk yesterday, but the leader pulled off an artistic draw. Moro-Pono was just a disaster, but he's still =2nd! |
Aug-26-08
| dx9293: Hopefully this is the start of a comeback? |
Aug-26-08 |
| eremite: I hope Ruslan will play for Ukraine in Dresden together with Ivanchuk, Karjakin, Eljanov and somebody else. It is time to score medals again. |
