A tribute to Robert James "Bobby" Fischer

11th World Chess Champion 1972-1975

March 9th 1943 - January 17th 2008

May he Rest in Peace.

*********KKKKKKKKKK********

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...

A classic picture of Bobby... As taken from the Zurich International Chess Tournament 1959 (my scan from the beautiful chess book of this tournament).

This is the Bobby that I knew - it's perhaps my all time favorite picture of him! :-)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...

Taken in New York on February 21st, 1967... The last time I saw him was at the Piatigorsky Cup II (1966) in Santa Monica during the Banquet Ceremony. Having the distinct pleasure of meeting Bobby on a one-to-one basis during the rest day between the Penultimate and Final round. Just Bobby, me and a chessboard with chess set up in his hotel room (on the 17th floor [I think it was] of the Miramar Hotel) for almost six full hours (I timed it - 5 hours and 45 minutes exactly). It was a once in a lifetime chess experience that I shall never forget.

Soon I shall write the 'full story' of my encounter with Bobby to be published on the web as an exclusive. My plan is to publish simultaneously on Chessdom and ChessDryad. I'll work out the ensuing details shortly. :) Hopefully, it will be soon now - as I still have many medical issues to resolve in the months ahead...

Until the deed is done my chessboard remains standing with 1. P-K4 played... <Best by T-E-S-T!> :^)

I've met with the following former World Chess Champions: Dr. Max Euwe, Vasily Smyslov, Mikhail Tal, Tigran (Tiger) Petrosian, Boris Spassky, and of course, Robert J. (Bobby) Fischer. Naturally I should also add the late great GM Paul Keres and the legendary & ever amazing GM Viktor Korchnoi too!

I was truly honored recently when my dear friend IM John Donaldson (Director of the Mechanics' Institute Chess Room) decided to host a Chess tourney in my honor! :))

The 'Alan Benson IM Norm Tournament' <Attached are the games from the Alan Benson IM Norm tournament held August 16-29 at the Mechanics' Institute Chess in San Francisco. Filipino IM Ricardo DeGuzman, who has made his home in Northern California the past decade, ran away with the event. 16-year-old Sam Shankland and reigning World Under 12 Champion Daniel Naroditsky were in contention for the IM norm of 6 1/2 points but fell short. Best wishes, John Donaldson> Thanks John! :))

I'm also a proud member of the "California Chess History - Hall of Fame" on 'ChessDryad'. Just scroll down to bottom. Thanks to my old chess friends: Kerry, Richard, Frisco & Mark! :-)

At one time or another the following titled chess players have all been very good friends of mine: GM's Walter Browne, James Tarjan, Yasser (Yaz) Seirawan, Larry Christiansen, Nick deFirmian & George Koltanowski. Also, IM's Imre Kφing, William G. Addison, Julio Kaplan, John Grefe, David Strauss, Elliot Winslow, John Donaldson, Vince McCambridge & Marc Leski. Note: George & Imre have both passed away and may they RIP... _______________________________________________

PS: My favorite chess players are (the short list): Morphy - Pillsbury (my first two chess heroes!) - all WCC's (notably the 'classical 14' and also add Bronstein, Keres & Korchnoi too) - the three wunderkinds ~Carlsen, Karjakin & Nepomniachtchi~ and... Ivanchuk - Morozevich - Grischuk - Radjabov - Shirov - Mamedyarov - Kamsky - Aronian - Topalov & Anand!

PPS: The ~Amber 'Rapids & Blindfold' Chess Tournament~ is one of my favorite chess tournaments. As, I'm also a specialist at Blindfold play having given several Simultaneous Chess Exhibitions of 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10 boards. All quite successful playing against a variety of mixed opposition from 'C players' to Experts! ;-)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...

That's me playing two Blindfold Simul Games against David Brooks (B player) and Pete Hyatt (C player) at the Cherryland Cafe! The time limit I believe used was 15 min (not '5 min' as Richard reported). So, it took just under 45 minutes (beat David quickly and drew with Pete). The 2nd pic is with the addition of Richard Shorman's 'CHESS' column in the 'Hayward Daily Review' (July 13, 1975).

Scored 3½-1½ (lost 1 and drew 1).

This was the flyer promoting my first 10-board Blindfold Simultaneous Exhibition in Monterey at the Service Club (September 23, 1973). Assisted by my late dear chess friend Ted Yudacufski who patiently called out all the moves to me. Scored 8-2 here (lost 1 and drew 2).

Note: Jude's report in the 'Berkeley Barb' (Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 1973) was incorrect in which he gave the final result as 7-3. As I do vividly recall that I never lost more than 'one game' in any of the Blindfold Simul Exhibitions that I performed. Generally speaking always beating the strongest player pitted against me (where I concentrated the hardest) with only one exception. The 8-board Blindfold Simul Exhibition held at 'The Chess Parlor' in San Francisco where I drew with USCF Expert Jim Buff (scored 6-2 there losing 1 game and drawing 2). Assisted by my old chess friend Donald Dean calling out all the moves to me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...

This was a flyer promoting a special 5-board Blindfold Simul in San Francisco at the Presidio Service Club (October 16, 1980). Assisted by my old chess friend Mike Goodall who called out the moves to me. I scored 3½-1½ (lost 1 and drew 1).

Went back to my former Bancroft Junior High School (San Leandro, CA) to perform a normal Simul Chess Exhibition against an army of kids including my brother David! (1967).

Personal note of thanks is due to <Annie K.>, <square dance>, <Larsker> and <amadeus> for all voting for me in this years prestigious <CAISSAR> Awards 2007 for 'Best Profile' in - WannaBe chessforum - Thank You all! :) My hearty Congrats goes to <Jessicafischerqueen> for winning this year for 'Best Profile!' :))

A very special thanks to <brankat> for generously sharing his CG.com <2007 Caissar Award> in the category for the <Most Constructive Kibitzer> with several of us. He's far too modest - he fully <deserved> to win! ;)

Thanks to <minasina> who also covers the all time great Chess Tournaments here on CG.com! Be sure to note his 'live' postings - User: minasina - when the Super GM tournament rounds are in progress where he provides all the essential URL links, game analysis info, time zones and playing times. Finally, Congrats to <minasina> who now has his very own Chessforum! :^)

Also, a big thanks to <frogbert> who kept up a 'live' rating list in his 'Kibitzer's Corner' as - Hans Arild Runde - However, there is "Good News" his <'Live Top List - Provisional World Chess Rankings'> now has a permanent home and can be viewed here: http://chess.liverating.org/

Finally, may I also add that someone here (an Anonymous Chessgames donor) kindly helped me and renewed my CG.com membership. Since it's impolite to ask - all I can really say is a heartfelt <'Thank You'> to the kind soul that undertook this action! :^)

Soon now I'm going to mix my Profile up a bit and present some of the Promotional aspects of my life promoting and organizing Professional Chess! :) I'll be working on all the new scans and details shortly... I'm still several weeks away yet. Hoping you all like it when I <finally> get it finished! <sheepish grin> ;)

Having just woke up (11 PM) you can clearly see that my schedule is still running completely normal for me. ~lol~ Now I have just viewed the <CG.com> homepage and I too see it there. ;)

He was one of the kindest old men that I've ever met. He befriended me back in 1962 (when I first went to the famous "Mechanics' Institute Chess Club" in San Francisco). He taught me so much and our many discussions of the past (he knew everyone) were both informative and enlightening. I only wish I'd asked him much more about his grand cherished memories... When he decided to relocate to Santa Monica (for his health) he choose me to be the one to help him after living in San Francisco since 1953. I was truly honored and what an adventure that was! Since I was only 17 years old at the time... ;) Anyway, I have a lot more to say but I'll save all the rest for his Chessgames bio... :))

Usually I just observe these CC games on <CG.com>. Since my disabilities are such that it's difficult for me to commit to long hours of analysis.

However, I see you need some help in voting for 37... Rg6 (close one, eh?). As an old CC Master strength player myself (having also saved difficult positions) it would be a strong candidate move. Keeping full protection of 'e6' and allowing us further improvement of our position to setup and regroup the necessary defensive resources for this endgame. So, I'll now vote for 37... Rg6! :^) All the Best, - Mal

PS: Voted! :) I'll now leave a short message in the Brains2 Forum.

I assume your question revolves around my apparent success playing the <ChessBookie> betting game? ~lol~

Having written quite a bit about it already you can find all of my current posts re: strategy and tactics playing the betting game on the <ChessBookie> kibitz page beginning on page - 92 - and the direct link to it is: Chessgames Bookie chessforum

Also, I've written about it in a round about way most recently in - Levon Aronian - Player's page with two current posts.

Also, recently posted a reply back to <ravel5184> in his C-forum. However, he deletes all of the posts contained within and starts completely over from scratch continually. ~lol~ Here is my deleted post brought back to life...

<<ravel5184: <malthrope: [...] PS: And, here I thought you were going to ask me for a <ChessBookie> betting tip! <grin> :)>

How do you win at Chessbookie?>

I'm so glad that you asked <ravel5184> :))

In a word - Influence! :^)

That and paying meticulous detail to who's betting what on whom? Which player or players are being neglected in the bets being made? Keeping track of the 'pool' totals per bet and in total of winners bets per tournament (ever-changing until the bet finally closes), and the specific odds (also ever-changing).

Also sensing when to <'Sit on my Hands'> (do nothing or making limited bets only) and when to <'Pull the Trigger!'> (Go for it!). Finally looking for the weakness in bets being made by others (they are betting BIG on 'xxx' thus changing the odds and pool numbers in my favor!). It's always the <'little things'> that make the primary difference! ~lol~ :^) My Best, - Mal>

So, I can assure you that basically I'm really quite normal of which my only special abilities that I can legally claim are my superb memory (strong total recall not a 'photographic memory' - which has been weakened with my medical disabilities and age), and also my ability to never give up until I have bloody solved it! ~lol~

Hope that helps <ketchuplover> ! :^)

Regards, - Mal

PS: The Chess Problem position you posted in your C-forum is of interest to me... Luv solving esoteric challenges! ;)

Task: White to play and draw.

I'll take a look see at it later and see if I can fathom a few insights as too how White can draw this? "Thank You" for also mentioning the solving time of the GM. I've always stressed when presenting Chess Problems (of all types and variety) to always keep track of your solving time. It at least serves as a benchmark to gauge your solving time against another solvers efforts. ;)

That's great <artyom2008> :)) Since I lost c-bucks in Round #9 (Chucky didn't win against Aronian hence producing 3 draws). Who knew there would be two Caro-Kann's! ~lol~ :((

<artyom2008: sent reply>

Got it! :) I'll send analysis of all your bets back to you in an e-mail. :) Since I want to keep our <ChessBookie> bet discussions just between you and me. It's not for 'public display' for anyone to read here. ;)

I'll try to have it ready to send in a few hours (if I can since my 'sleeping patterns' are so erratic)... :^) My Best, - Mal
