Benzol: Wonderful positional play by Botvinnik to win this ending.

Benzol: 57...Kmoves 58.Rc7 and Black loses his pawn.

"Here Black resigned, as he loses his pawn, but within half an hour excitement broke out in the tournament hall. Somebody expressed the opinion that the ending with a pawn at g6 is drawn. I merely replied that I had once seen Smyslov win such an ending against Simagin. After a short time the atmosphere calmed down. A sure way to win was found in a book on the endgame". - Mikhail Botvinnik.

I wonder if this was the game Botvinnik was referring to Smyslov vs Simagin, 1952

Oct-29-04   tayer: Smyslov vs Simagin, 1952 has a diferent endgame than this one. White should win with something like: 57. ... Kf8 58. Rc7 c1=Q 59. Rxc1 Kg7 60. Rc7+ Kf8 61. Rf7+ Kg8 62. Rd7 Ba1 63. g7 Kh7 (the threat is 64. Kg6 winning ) 64. Rd1 Bb2 65. Rg1 Bxg7 66. Rh1+ Kg8 67. Kg6 Kf8 68. Rf1+ Kg8 69. Rc1 ...

Benzol: <eyeQ> posed a question at my forum asking if the move 40...g5 would have drawn and did Botvinnik comment about this move.

OK, his comment in "Half a Century of Chess" after 40...Bf6 (the move Black played) is :

"Black misses the only chance of saving the game by 40...g5, and after 41.f5 Bf6 White would have found it much more difficult (if at all possible) to breach the opponent's defences."

So it appears that 40...g5 will draw, but please don't ask me how.

:)

Apr-13-09   eyeQ: Thank you very much Paul! So my analysis gets confirmed.
