| Jonathan Berry: Welcome to this section. Hard to believe that there is one which deals with ... me! I am Jonathan Berry of Canada. Games 9 and 10 in the list (as it shows on 6 Feb 2006) vs. Robatsch and Schmid are not mine. Probably David Berry of Los Angeles. Chess Informant gives a game of David's against Gheorghiu as mine. But I did play the one in Informant 20 against Denis Allan. I was active in Correspondence Chess, especially from 1976-1995. My name sometimes appears in CC as F.J. Berry. I am an ICCF GM of Correspondence Chess. Also an International Arbiter since 1975. |

| Jim Bartle: I think Jonathan Berry was also an editor of the marvelous magazine Inside Chess, which started in 1988 as a bi-weekly and succumbed a few years as a monthly. The Internet is great and all, but I miss not getting my printed magazine every two weeks. |

| Jonathan Berry: Concerning Inside Chess, I had several titles, my favourite of which was Technical Editor. I edited (no "Technical" modifier) a couple of issues, but after I came up with headlines such as "Two Kays Quaff" and "Peaches do Bloom on Io", Michael Franett was loath to take so much time off. The late and much missed Michael Franett was the editor of Inside Chess from the beginning in 1987 (first issue was in January 1988) to the end in 2000 (last issue was January 2000). |

click for larger view is 22 white on move, with the purported diagram position of the Ivanchuk vs Anand, Amber Blind, 2007. I checked last week's column (I finally got many of your 200+ columns from the past 6 years paraphrased in a personal chessbase database, with annotations and variations - we can correspond in private if copyright issues between you and the Globe & Mail would allow you to possibly share some of them or not...), and didn't see it appear recently at the purported 22nd move. Is there a source of the diagram, and I'd also be interested in seeing the outflanking portion of the hint to the As-Suli puzzle of Shatranj, posted on my user page (I had suggested it for a puzzle of the day, but chessgames passed on it...). Cheers, and keep up the nice work in the column. |

Thanks for the message. My column of 31 March 2007 was not intended to be an April Fools joke. The paper mistakenly put in the diagram from the previous week, 24 March.The position is from the game Harikrishna-Short, Bled Olympiad 2002, Black to play. As you'd expect from a diagram, Black makes a surprising move (see end of this message). I didn't record the outflanking portion of the solution to the As-Suli puzzle. And it is not easily found in google. It is from the column of 8 Feb 2003. I suppose I'll have to work it out ... l8r. Spoiler follows:
